no idea about task manager, but i had problems with fast user switching. i cant remember how i fixed it, but im sure i googled it and it was definetly in services.msc
what do you mean you don't have it there ?
start > run > services.msc and you can't see it there ?

it is not task manager problem, so i doubt it helps, but instead of task manager you should be using Process Explorer
its much better than task manager, but your problem has something to do with user.

what did you do to cause this or how/when it started ?

if you are using default version of xp, then you can always run a windows repair using the cd/dvd, but it will wipe your settings (not files, only settings, like sounds, theme..etc).

well as i said, use process explorer.
for spyware and such, get zonealarm security suite and ccleaner.
first try cleaning with CCleaner with all options on (exept 'wipe free space') and then use ccleaner's registry clean too with all options on. then reboot and see what happens.
if it won't fix it, then get zonealarm security suite, but use torrents, because it is not free.
use torrentz.com < good enought to get working version.
