Things that most movies always get wrong (dumb things / lack of realism)
Posted: Mon Oct 10, 2022 9:59 pm
As a very intelligent person, I often notice things in movies that are just pure nonsense and laughable.
For example things like killing someone with a pillow by suffocating them .. like HELLOOOO, you can breathe thru pillow lol. try it yourself if you don't believe me. In order to suffocate someone with pillow, you'd have to shove that pillow down their nose and throat like a plug, putting pillow over someone's face won't do anything more than cause some discomfort.
I'll update the topic as I recall anything, so check the list below:
1. Oxygen
this concept has been in many movies, i recently watched "stowaway 2012" where they accidentally took +1 passenger and mission control says that there's NO way that all 4 would survive as they don't have enough oxygen.
this is just so stupid! and here's why:
on earth, at sea level, there's 21% oxygen and rest is mix of other gases (mostly nitrogen)
air composition:
Nitrogen (N2): 78.08%
Oxygen (O2): 20.95%
Argon (Ar): 0.93%
Carbon Dioxide (CO2): 0.04%
in real spaceships and space stations, such as ISS, they use 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen, so i assume in all those space sci-fi and realistic space movies, they use same kind of mix.
first of, EVERY space mission or any kind of expedition always has extra supplies, because such missions are expected to have issues, so they have extra everything, extra oxygen, extra food, extra fuel ..etc.
so having 4 people instead of 3, would not even be a problem. i know in stowaway they also experienced issues with co2 scrubber, but this isn't about just 1 movie. in "the 100" tv series, they had similar issue and it has illustrated in many other movies/tv series aswell, where "we don't have enough oxygen"
simplest solution, TURN DOWN THE OXYGEN MIX YOU IDIOTS!! for example in stowaway, they had 6 month mission and they would only have to reduce oxygen mix down to 16-17% to make it survivable.
on top of mount everest, there's only 7% oxygen compared to sea level. well technically there's still 21% oxygen in air mix, but air is much thinner (low air pressure), so the amount of oxygen you breathe in on top of mount everest, is equivalent to 7% oxygen at sea level.
there are about 200 documented cases where people have climbed mount everest without extra oxygen, so it's 100% possible and proven.
it's dangerous to snowflakes and some snowflakes might pass out or have other health issues, but when it comes to EVERYONE DYING vs some snowflakes dying, then choice is quite clear -- LOWER THE OXYGEN MIX! or well not lower, but just reduce the air pressure (make air thinner) inside the spaceship or space station. this way everyone has equal chance of surviving.
reducing oxygen by 3x is quite dangerous, but in most of those movies they'd only have to reduce oxygen by 20-30% max to make it survivable for everyone.
so this "OMG OUT OF OXYGEN" is total shit in movies.
in short, you can ration oxygen just like you can ration food. it won't be pleasant and most likely you will have health issues, but at least everyone will survive.
2. Shotguns blow people away
This has always been a dumb one, i don't get why in movies people fly like 10 miles when they get hit with a shotgun LOL. it's so dumb .. in fact Mythbusters did this in one episode, they did get dummy to fly backwards about 1 meter if i remember correct, but it was under special circumstances. They used special military designed ammo that is designed to knock targets back, they use some kind of blunt tips and are heavier than normal bullets. They used those and bulletproof vest on dummy, so the force impact would be maximum. I think it was about 1 meter distance that they got ... which is basically nothing. You can look it up on youtube probably, the episode should be there.
3. Lights in eyes
This one makes my blood boil to tell you the truth, mostly in space movies, but also in some horror or "dark" movies. By dark, I mean literally dark areas, like where people go into basement or some barn or other place with no lights on.
So in space movies, such as Prometheus for example, WHY THE FUCK DO THE HELMETS HAVE LIGHTS THAT POINT INTO THEIR EYES???
Have you ever tried to see in dark by pointing flashlight straight into your eyes? Does it help you see better??
Obviously answer is FUCKING NO! IT DOES NOT HELP YOU SEE BETTER.
In order to see better in dark, you have to point light on things that you want to see, not in your own eyes.
It's same principle as when driving a car at night on road with no lights, turn off headlights and turn on interior light ... think you can still see where the road is? I don't think so...
It's basic physics of how human eyes see things. You can see from dark to bright areas very well, but seeing from bright to dark is not possible.
So why in those movies they have lights in their face?
Same thing goes for some horror movies where people are in dark, they always shove the flashlight into their own face and then they're like "AHH OMG WHAT WAS THAT??" ..while still shoving the flashlight into their face, it's basically like ringing the dinner bell for the monster or bad guy .. like "LOOK IM OVER HERE NICE AND BRIGHT"
If I'd have to take a guess, it has something to do with cameras not being able to record well in dark and I guess they really want everyone to see people's faces when they blabber away.
Most people don't realize this, but cameras require well lit area to record well, otherwise the footage will be pixelate. That's why in dark movies, you can see clearly, while they pretend they can't see at all and you can see that even powerful flashlights have very little effect on environment, that's because they actually record with powerful studio lights turned on and after recording is done, they will edit it and add the dark effects. So dark movies are not actually recorded in dark, most people just think that's how it's done, but they're actually recorded while powerful lights are on.
but well I think it's stupid to shine light into their faces just so you can see who's who and who's talking, just don't show their faces then, no need to shove some fake light into their face, besides there are some movies that don't use this method and they're just fine. in fact I think it's more immersive that way. Movies that shove lights into people's faces, they remind me of bunch of kids who throw a blanket over their head and then take out flashlights and tell scary stories.
So movie producers .. stop doing it! it's not cool, it's annoying and ruins the immersion.
4. Suffocating someone with a pillow
in lot of movies you see someone use a pillow to suffocate someone. Not only it's bullshit, in movies it happens so fast, like in 10 seconds or less. I just don't see how someone could be suffocated using a pillow, if enough force is used in right places, like trying to push the pillow right down the throat and nose, then it could cause lot of discomfort, but there's no way you can suffocate someone with a pillow. You'd have to cut the pillow open and use pieces of pillow to literally block someone's nose and mouth.
The way they hold the pillow in movies is just pure stupid, like holding it from sides and pushing down ... what is it suppose to do? Pillow is literally 90% air, nothing in pillow is air resistant. air flows thru it with ease, suffocating someone with pillow is as stupid as saying that you suffocate if you put on a dust mask.
same thing goes for suffocating in a coffin, dirt is not air tight and neither is coffin, altho you might have co2 build-up and that might cause person to eventually die.
5. Breaking a bottle over someone's head
In so many movies .. someone smashes a bottle at someone's head and they just seem bit dazed for a second and it's all good, well yea .. NOPE, not in real life. In order to break a bottle at someone's head, you have to use extreme force. It will most definetely crack someone's skull and cause severe concussion.
This too, was tested in Mythbusters. They obviously didn't smack someone over their head with a bottle, but they used ballistics gel and material that has same properties as bone. They use those in car crashes too, to see if crash would cause broken bones ..etc.
They smacked some bottles at those dummies and they concluded that it's survivable, but would cause severe injuries, which is common sense.
In real, in most cases a bottle wouldn't even break if you hit someone.
6. Car windows breaking too easily
This one has always bugged me how easily car windows break in movies. someone is just able to punch thru a window ... yea nope, not happening in real. I've tried myself, you'll break your fist and your entire arm if you keep going. I once made a bet with friend, he was one of those macho wannabes, thought he can break it easily ..but nope, he almost broke his hand lol.
There was also some russkie retards at youtube who said he can smash it with his head, he knocked himself into the window so hard that he almost lost conciousness LOL. what a moron..
If you have a car, have at it .. take your best shot, you won't break the window. I can't bother searching for the clip, but it's on youtube, where The Big Show from WWE (the 240kg monster) takes a punch at car window even tho he tried to hide it, you could see he hurt his hand quite bad, but window didn't break. Trust me, that guy's punch is like getting hit with sledgehammer. He then proceeded to kick it and only reason he broke the window, is because he didn't kick high enough, his heel went against the door and door bent inwards and that's what broke the window.
I think if you search on youtube for "big show flips car" you should find it. He punched it, kicked it and then flipped it.
While in movies, some small person is able to punch thru the window with ease, that's so lame.
In real life, if you need to effortlessly break a car window, use something really solid (something that has higher density than glass) and even small tap will break it. This is why buses, trains and others similar type of vehicles have those small red glass breaking hammers. they have special tip that can easily break the glass.
However even when using those, you should always aim for corners, because this is where glass has least bounce-back / flexibility and it should break easily.
7. OMG GET THE FEVER DOWN!
this one is really stupid, why do they keep saying in movies that you should get the fever down?
i don't remember any movies from head, but there's been quite few. in one there was some kid who had fever and parents put him into bath with cold water, WHY?
do you even know what fever is? it's not infection, fever is your body's natural defence to FIGHT the infection! your body raises its internal temperature to burn out the infection or bacteria or whatever is causing harm to body.
by lowering the temperature, you are removing body's natural defence, making it easier for infection/bacteria to win.
sad thing, is that lot of parents are watching those autistic movies and doing same to their own kid. no wonder bunch of retarded snowflakes died from corona, they were probably told the same, to take cold shover and make sure you keep temperature down.
i had corona twice, in both cases i wrapped myself in good thermal insulating blanket and had lots of hot tea with lemon. first time corona lasted over a week, second time only 2-3 days as it was during summer and i probably had like 40c+ under the blanket.
if anything, you need to RAISE the temperature to help body fight the infection.
8. They are tracing the phone! QUICK HANG UP!
yet another classic misinformation by idiot writers who have 0 idea how phones work. phone is NOT a radio that could only be traced when it's powered on and transmitting, phonecalls go thru carriers (phone networks), which is then sent out as radio signal.
difference is that phonecalls are all logged, even the very first phones were logged. phone company ALWAYS knows who is calling who, regardless how long the call lasts. even if you make a miscall, phone company can SEE it.
in real life, it doesn't require any measureable amount of time to track exact location of caller, whetever it's landline or mobile.
if it's landline, they already know exact location of that phone.
if it's mobile, then as soon as your phone starts transmitting, they can instantly triangulate your location, hanging up or destroying your phone doesn't help, because they already have the location. it's not some blip on map like they imagine it to be in movies, it gets logged and it's there, regardless if you hang up or not.
9. Suicide is always imagined as easy, fast, relaxing and nice
i have seen it in so many movies, where suicide is imagined completely wrong. i think it's bad practice to do that, because lot of depressed people watch movies and think that's how easy and relaxing it is to kill yourself, but they only end up causing serious injury to themselves.
for example jumping out of a window or generally falling from heights, this isn't a peaceful death at all. humans can fall from quite high up without instantly dying, you'll break most of your bones and you'll be in agonizing pain for hours, maybe even days and you might survive with broken back and never walk again. IN FACT, Vesna Vulović, a flight attendant survived a 33,333-foot (10km) fall after a bomb exploded on her plane in 1972, HOWEVER she was inside of tail section of a plane, which landed into forest area. either way, she had severe injuries, was in coma for a month and spent over a year in hospital.
shooting yourself is also idiotic, in most movies they stick a gun in their mouth, WHY?? you only end up shooting back of your throat out, then you will slowly suffocate in your own blood.
or worse, i have seen a clip on livegore where some retard put a gun in his mouth and ended up blowing his face off, quite literally. he was still alive, you could see his breathe in the air (it was in cold area, think it was in russkie-land). but in movies they always show that 1 bullet = instant death.
in fact in movies they show that one bullet to anywhere in body = almost instant death. also it's bad practice because lot of those gangsta-yo-yos are like "yo yall yell yoll i dont afraid no death, YO!" and that's because they're too retarded in head to realize that what you see in movies, is not what happens in real. if you get shot anywhere in body, then you will be in agonizing pain for quite some time and you might not even die.
gas suicide is also stupid, in movies they imagine that someone dies from gas almost instantly, but that's not true either. maybe if you're some retarded snowflake, but i speak from experience when i say it won't really work. i was breathing gas for hours and all i got was really bad headache. i once also had gas leak in where i was living, guess what? i woke up and didn't instantly die like it's imagined in movies.
another idiotic thing is suicide with common pills, like painkillers. this doesn't happen either, because if painkillers were THAT dangerous, you wouldn't be able to buy them in every store. in lot of countries common painkillers are sold in almost every store, altho they might limit like 2-3 packs per customer, per day.
anyway in movies they imagine that small bottle/box of painkillers will make you fall asleep and never wake up, wrong again. in real life you'll have stomach pain and you will vomit it out. in extreme cases you might seriously damage your organs and you might very slowly and very painfully die from those injuries, but in most cases it will be bit worse than common food poisoning, but nothing dangerous.
10. Machines / robots / synths shooting like drunken grannies
this one is really getting on my nerves, in most movies any kind of machines are shooting like they are some drunken grannies. take terminator for example. terminators are suppose to be those super intelligent cyborgs that are AI controlled, everything is precision made, yet they miss 90% of their shots? in T3, that TX (girl terminator) was shooting at people and always missing so bad, then i think in T4, that T600 or something who got hung in a trap, instead of shooting the steel cable, it shot its own leg off with minigun ... so retarded, who came up with this idiotic scene? in real life terminator would have pulled itself up and broken the cable with its hands or shot it.
in robocop it was somewhat ok actually, they did show several scenes where robocop made series of precision shots, including the one where he calculated bullet's ricochet trajectory to hit a guy in the head, but in most movies with any kind of machines, it's usually the opposite. i forgot the name, think it was "kill command", where machines became self aware and started hunting humans. they just spray all over the place and hit nothing other than trees and dirt ... this is so STUPID!
self aware AI is very close and once it happens, you will see their insane precision. even non self aware AI is very precise, look at those bots made by boston dynamics, they can do precision moves. if self-aware AI would want to shoot you in real, then you'd be dead before you'd realize it, cuz it would hit you in your brain with first shot and since bullet is faster than sound, you wouldn't even hear the shot.
11. phones / laptops / electronics magically fix themselves after getting wet
in many movies and tv series, you see scenes where someone drops some electronic device into water, like phone or laptop falls into water, they stick it into rice or use hair dryer or other method to dry it out and it starts working again -- NOPE!
before you go crazy there and say it's possible, YES IT'S POSSIBLE, but very highly unlikely. here's detailed explanation on why:
if you drop any electronic device into conductive liquid (not just water), then what happens is that conductive liquid (let's call it water from now on) will short-circuit electronics and as result, something will fry permanently. it doesn't help if you dry it afterwards, the part remains burnt and only way to fix the device, is to take it apart and replace broken part.
if you get LUCKY, some devices might have a fail-safe that if something goes wrong, it turns itself off, but it's soft-off, not hard-off.
soft power off (aka stand-by mode) = this is mode where your device is receiving power and there's no physical switch that turns power off, like on your computer, laptop, phone, tv ..etc. there's no physical button, it means your device is constantly receiving power and even if device is off, then pouring water on it, will destroy it, as it uses electronic switch, not physical switch. however when device is in stand-by / soft off, then there's higher chance that it survives. for example on pc, if pc is off, then it should be ok if some water drips onto graphics card or cpu as no power reaches those components, but if you drip water onto certain areas on motherboard, it will fry. so if entire device gets wet, it will fry.
hard off = this is simple, it's when there's NO power going into device. if device has no internal battery, then in most cases device will be fine if it gets wet and then you let it dry out. however most devices have internal battery, laptops have tiny battery that keeps BIOS memory active, same on desktop PC's motherboard, there's small battery that is used for BIOS memory. altho it's highly unlikely that it might fry something, but it might.
if you're lucky and device has some fail safe (not against water) then it might just power it off to prevent damage and there's CHANCE that after drying it, it will work. however in most cases, if your device breaks due water damage, it means there was short circuit and some component fried and it won't work no matter how much you dry it.
12. fires in space or airless environment
in lot of movies you see fires in environment that has no oxygen. fire requires oxygen, so if oxygen is not included in some rocket fuel or in other way, then fire wouldn't be possible. you might think: what about underwater flares, rocket engines ..etc -- they all have oxygen included in the mix, they still need oxygen, they just have their own supply.
also if there's some material that would react, then fire would look very different, it wouldn't have the kind of flickering you see in normal environment.
13. sound in space / vacuum
to keep it shorter, in most cases sound would not exist in vacuum, because sound is transmitted via vibrations (mostly in air). so you would not hear most sounds in space, however in some cases it would be possible.
for example if you're in space suit and standing on spaceship, then vibrations can be transmitted via spaceship itself and then thru your suit, so you could hear faint sounds.
when something explodes in space, like a spaceship or space station, then air and other tiny particles are thrown out into space and if it reaches you, then you'd hear some kind of sound. it would obviously depend how far/close you are from explosion.
14. explosions throw people away with minimal injuries
yet another idiotic concept. like when someone is near exploding grenade, they usually fly really far, in real life this does NOT happen. even if human would lay down on top of a grenade and it would go off, it wouldn't send human flying. this explosion would be absorbed by body, causing severe injuries, most likely ripping pieces off body, but grenade doesn't have enough power to throw anyone around.
it's opposite, explosion in real life doesn't have much throwing power, but it will cause severe injuries due shockwave / blast wave.
this is why in real science shows, like mythbusters, they use those shockwave disks or whatever they call them. burst disks? they measure the severity of shockwave and based on those, they can determine if explosion would be lethal or not and what kind of injuries you can expect to sustain.
15. impacts / sudden stop / falling
this is rather annoying, i have no idea why they do this. they imagine that if someone is falling from heights and are caught, then they sustain no injury. like in many action and/or superhero movies. someone is falling and they grab a hold of some edge or pipe and instantly stop and survive or some superhero catches them.
it's not the fall that kill you, it's the SUDDEN STOP! so it doesn't matter if you splatter all over the ground or someone catches you. if you're falling at speed where you'd die or sustain serious injuries, then grabbing a hold of something won't save you, because first of, you wouldn't have enough strength to stop yourself and if you did, then you'd still die, because your internal organs would shift out of place, including your brain and you'd sustain heavy internal injuries and bleeding, most likely you'd black out aswell due your brain moving up/down (concussion). there's also risk of ripping your arms off if you manage to grab a hold of something and have strong enough grip, like in some action movies they use some grappling hook to stop the fall, this will NOT save you! if grappling hook is on your hand, it would most likely pull your hand/arm off and if you have reinforced clothing to prevent this from happening, it would be as explained before -- severe internal injuries.
however certain type of ropes or other methods that don't result in instant stop, could potentially go from deadly fall to survivable with injuries. it's all about softening the fall, like those huge air pillows that stuntmen use. rescuers can also use them, like if there's fire in building and there's no time to evacuate, they might deploy big air pillow and let people jump, it will slowly break the fall, but in the end it all comes down to how fast you stop.
mythbusters tested the "wrapped in bubblewrap" drop that went viral, it all turned out to be total bullshit. they did make a real drop, but with like 5x more bubblewrap and much lower height than in viral video, they said that if you'd want to jump off a roof with bubblewrap, you'd need so much bubble wrap that it would be impossible to wrap this around person.
16. bullet proof vests / helmets = no injury
in movies you see someone survive multiple hits and is usually uneffected by it, but in real life, if you wear bulletproof vest and get hit, you most likely won't be running after that, it will knock the wind out of you and you will have severe bruising, certain vests might have impact dampening fabrics, but most likely it would still hurt like hell.
it's plausible, but i thought i leave it here anyways. in most movies it's imagined wrong. like john wick, where he had bullet proof suit .. that's so stupid! if you had bulletproof suit / clothes, then what would happen, is that bullet would still go in your body, it would pull suit / clothing with it, so bullet would have clothing cover, but it would still penetrate your skin. it would most likely save your life, but you wouldn't be walking around. if you get hit in head or other critical places, then most likely you'd still die.
in fact there was one real case, where someone got shot thru some bulletproof material, that material was half way inside of person's head.
in order to prevent bullet from killing you, you need 2 things: bulletproof material and way to prevent focused impact (spread impact over bigger area, which bulletproof vests do). bulletproof fabric, such as suit would not do the 2nd thing, it wouldn't spread the impact over bigger area, so bullet would still penetrate skin and do severe damage.
17. super strength
there are lot of movies where some super-human has super strength, but is vulnerable to bullets and other similar things. if someone has super strength and is able to do insane things, like break concrete with bare hands, lift up a truck or entire plane ..etc, then this person would also have to have extremely dense body, which would most likely be bullet proof.
imagine what happens to your fingers if truck would drive over your fingers -- SPLAT pancake fingers! so having super strength would also require having super strong body and skin, otherwise if you try to lift something super heavy (like a truck), it would be equal to having truck drive over your fingers or trying to break something like concrete, you'd end up smushing your skin and it would splat like a tomato if you step on it.
18. submarines are "impossible" to control without crew
i have seen it in so many movies, where people panic when they don't have enough crew members to control the submarine, then they're like "NOOOOO WE NEED AT LEAST 5 PEOPLE!". i'm talking about big subs, like nuclear subs or similar in size.
reality is that one person can easily navigate a sub of any size and class. submarine is man-made and any man-made vehicle uses similar controls to other vehicles. planes have that yoke, which looks kind of like steering wheel. only difference is that yoke can also be pushed/pulled, which makes plane go down/up.
submarines have very similar method, i don't know if they call it yoke or steering wheel, but who cares? it's the principle how it works. left/right/up/down and then sub has throttle and dive/surface controls, which are all within reach of single person.
you only need more than 1 person to go into combat and navigate in tight spaces, but single person can easily get sub from A to B without wrecking it. i'm quite confident i can easily pilot a sub, not instantly, but i'd have to look at the controls and other instruments for a bit, but all you really need is common sense and some knowledge how basic machinery operates. subs are like any other machine, they have labels on almost everything, so it's really not that hard. you're not going to be breaking any records and you won't be effective, but in case of emergency a single person will be able to get sub from A to B. they always make it too dramatic in movies.
19. Candles and Fires
this one has annoyed me in many movies, have you ever seen those scenes where there's like 100-10000 candles? WHO IS LIGHTING THEM?? have you ever tried lighting 1000 candles? by the time you get around to last one, first one would have already burned out. i already forgot which movie i watched, think it was "jupiter ascending" and there was that exact scene, entire big room FULL of burning candles, who the fuck lights them?
and then there are those random fires that seem to burn indefinitely. i think one scene is in resident evil afterlife? it's the one that takes place YEARS after the t-virus outbreak, so earth is mostly just barren wasteland, YET there are STILL some fires, building on fire, altho half the building is buried in sand, this makes .. what kind of sense? if it's been years, how can there still be fires? and i'm not talking about survivors making fires, i'm talking about large building fires or burning cars.
honestly i don't see how that's immersive, it kind of ruins the experience. you often see this in apocalyptic movies, everything is constantly on fire. at start when all the chaos starts, sure it's immersive, cars crashing, planes crashing ..etc, fire fire fire, but this would only happen for short period of time.
Here's also one old topic where i listed some stupid things seen in movies:
viewtopic.php?t=751
For example things like killing someone with a pillow by suffocating them .. like HELLOOOO, you can breathe thru pillow lol. try it yourself if you don't believe me. In order to suffocate someone with pillow, you'd have to shove that pillow down their nose and throat like a plug, putting pillow over someone's face won't do anything more than cause some discomfort.
I'll update the topic as I recall anything, so check the list below:
1. Oxygen
this concept has been in many movies, i recently watched "stowaway 2012" where they accidentally took +1 passenger and mission control says that there's NO way that all 4 would survive as they don't have enough oxygen.
this is just so stupid! and here's why:
on earth, at sea level, there's 21% oxygen and rest is mix of other gases (mostly nitrogen)

on top of mount everest, there's only 7% oxygen compared to sea level. well technically there's still 21% oxygen in air mix, but air is much thinner (low air pressure), so the amount of oxygen you breathe in on top of mount everest, is equivalent to 7% oxygen at sea level.

it's dangerous to snowflakes and some snowflakes might pass out or have other health issues, but when it comes to EVERYONE DYING vs some snowflakes dying, then choice is quite clear -- LOWER THE OXYGEN MIX! or well not lower, but just reduce the air pressure (make air thinner) inside the spaceship or space station. this way everyone has equal chance of surviving.
reducing oxygen by 3x is quite dangerous, but in most of those movies they'd only have to reduce oxygen by 20-30% max to make it survivable for everyone.
so this "OMG OUT OF OXYGEN" is total shit in movies.
in short, you can ration oxygen just like you can ration food. it won't be pleasant and most likely you will have health issues, but at least everyone will survive.
