depends on your country, but i think that 99% of computer shops sells controllers. im not sure, but i think that all modern age game controllers (gamepads, analog controllers, steering wheels, joysticks..etc) use USB and nothing else.

if im right about xbox controller, then theres 2 versions. 1 is specially for PC and it doesnt work on xbox360 and other is specially for xbox360 console. so i dont think its possible to use your PC controller in xbox, i dont have xbox so i really dont know, but thats how it is usually.

I personally hate all kind of wireless controllers (keyboard, mouse, game controllers..etc), because they never work as they should. I suggest you to buy a normal analogue controller. you know .. analogs are those sticks on controller, which makes it possible to use 10% of throttle, or 5%, 90% ..etc.
some games also support only xbox360 controller, i think one of them is Juiced2 (total failure game) and also Devil May Cry 4 (i had to edit some files to get my Rumble controller working).

I have 4 controllers in total (other than mouse and keyboard).
-Steering wheel+pedals - using this for simulation driving games (like testdrive unlimited, GTR2 ..etc)
-Cyborg Rumble P2500 analog controller - using it in non simulator driving games
-Gamepad (without analogs) - using it as remote for my winamp

all of them use USB, but sometimes they conflict. for example Resident Evil 4 is one of the games which doesnt have good mouse support and should be played with analog controller, but problem is when i connect more than one controller then they mix up and nothing works. so i need to plug only my analog controller.

anyways just go check some local computer shops. Best choice would be the PS2 style controller. 8-way pad, 2 analogs, 4 buttons, start-select buttons and 4 shoulder buttons. Xbox360 is good too, but i dont like the layout..one analog is in wierd place. original PS2 controller also has some nice feature that i never seen before..it has sensitive buttons (you can use normal button to apply 10% of throttle, or 5%..etc) This function is needed in Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3. you can always buy one online too.
