Nvidia GTX 760 + 700 series BSOD Fix [Only when Gaming]

Post by KEN »

I found the solution today after 3-4 days of looking. So I recently got a GTX760 and after just 15-20 minutes of gameplay I used to get BSOD. I tried everything, updated every driver, changed to a different HDD, ran memtest, cleaned out dust, uninstalled the usb ports and reinstalled everything, ran on a fresh windows install.

The problem is with latest Nvidia driver versions: 320.18 and 320.49 + All the new beta after 320.49.
The problem I noticed here is that most people with the gtx 760 are having this problem of BSOD and those crashes and freezes while running firefox. Even greater problem here is that any driver before 320.18 were released before 760,770 & 780 GTX series came out so installing those older drivers doesn't normally work because those drivers do not detect these cards. So we are stuck with only those options for drivers which are faulty and hence we are not able to solve the problem.

Now the trick here is to hack the INF of the older drivers(314.22 is the best, I'm using it now), and make them detect your 700 series cards.
You can get 64bit 314.22 version drivers from: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win8-win7- ... river.html
Get the program "7zip" and right click the driver .exe and extract it to a folder. Inside you'll see a folder named "Device.Driver", go inside that driver and replace the original file with the one I have attached below.
Modded-nv_disp.inf-GTX760.zip
(20.89 KiB) Downloaded 965 times
This file is already edited to detect your 700 series cards and all you need to do after copying it is run the setup and the drivers 314.22 will be installed even on your 700 series cards:
Untitled.png
Now after this I played Assassins Creed 3 for a long enough time. The BSOD might return, can't say for sure but this has probably made the crash happen at after a longer time + fixed some issues. Earlier in my Review and First Impression thread about gtx 760, I talked about Assassins Creed 3 being unplayable on my PC due to CPU being a bottleneck but now I can actually run it over 30 fps in Boston too. Earlier it was 20 or below in Boston so seems like the driver version 314.22 are a better choice over the 320.49 if you're using a 700 series card. This does not happen to everyone with 700 series cards but it does seem many people are having the issue.

UPDATE 1 : Played Bioshock Infinite for a long time, over 2 hours. NO BSOD. So I guess the problem is fixed + the fps improved by 10 but loading time has increased compared to before + lag when loading a new area etc. but I guess that might be my cpu, this lag and loading time was less with 320.49 drivers but overall fps in gameplay was 10 fps slower than the 314.22.

UPDATE 2 : Played Tomb Raider for a good amount of time, no crashes or BSOD. Ran benchmark tool, only about 2 fps increase over the previous benchmark I did -> http://sethioz.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9474

ah ah ah i can't believe i did not remember this. you've had those BSODs for a while by now, but before you used to have Radeon i think? .. but about 6-12 months ago there was same issue with 500 series drivers. i updated and then started getting random BSODs .. i downgraded and it was fine. after some time they fixed the drivers and it was gone.

So to every nVidia card owner, if you start getting random BSODs after you get a new graphics card or update drivers, then most likely it's another mess-up with drivers, so downgrade to older ones (one that worked) and see if it fixes it, then you know for sure if its drivers or not.

Raedon had issues with drivers too but I updated it and never really played any games since it wasn't capable of running any game on highest. Yesterday I put it back and just to test and ran Assassins Creed 3 at highest even though at lagged like hell. It didn't crash or BSOD so I knew problem was either the GPU or the Drivers.

There were only 2 drivers available for 760 and I had already tried both of them thats why I was out of options until I found a tutorial on some forum about changing the INF.
Don't know why Nvidia won't fix it, even in the latest beta drivers, the issue exists.
314.22 are probably the most stable and good drivers from Nvidia people should use incase of crashes and problems.

maybe they are unaware of the issue, people hardly report issues. report it to them, see if fix comes out.
or if they report, its just idiots who say "IT DOESNT WORK OMG HELP!" .. so obviously nVidia does nothing, because there is nothing you can do about such idiotic "report".

Another general fix to mysterious issues, is to simply take apart your PC, take out your RAM, CPU, GPU and disconnect all the PSU cables, clean everything properly and put it all back by making sure everything is connected properly, ive seen loose MOLEX cable pins that don't look like they have bad connection, but they cause issues.
I hate MOLEX, they get messed up so easily. i have some fans that have very stupid MOLEX pins, they move around its very hard connecting them ... you might end up connecting it and think its connected, but in progress you pushed out one of the pins, fan will work, but its bad connection and if this happens in any other hardware it can easily cause BSOD.

Nvidia forum was full of proper reports about the drivers and proper feedback. They have a section just for providing feedbacks on the latest driver releases but anyhow I sent them a report too. Hopefully they fix it in the next driver release.

guess they're just too slow. i keep wondering how companies can release untested shit, they need people to test out drivers before release. company that big, has no problem spending 10000eur on test computers, they should build different computres, with intel and amd CPUs and different motherboards and test all of their video cards in there with different driver versions, to see if they are stable enough to play games on.

Hey, bit of a PC noob here. I've recently got myself a new pc along with the GeForce GTX 760 graphics card. I'm having the same issues, to the point where I've had to completely uninstall the graphics drivers just to be able to get on here long enough to type. I'm looking for the "7zip" that you're talking about, but I can't seem to find anything close to it anywhere. Wondering if you could give a bit more detailed description of how to do this.

Old post, I know, but nowhere else seems to know anything close to how to fix this >.<

It's not old post, I just posted this like 2 weeks back. Which gpu do you have? 760? if so then who is the manufacturer? From your name and sites with stocks I'm guessing you have Msi twin frozr.

7zip is at: http://www.7-zip.org/

but now I'm using nvidia drivers version 327.23 which didn't require to do anything and fixed most of my bsod issue. I still do get bsod but like after 2-3 hours straight hours of playing gta 4. So I guess get these drivers from their site and you'll be good to go.

I did what you said and tried 314.22, I'm still having the same problems. I tried loading up a couple games and they seemed alright, just like before. Then I tried Minecraft and it all went to shizz. The drivers you've got now are the ones that it all started happening on, so I know they won't work in my case :< and the support guys are being extremely slow in replying, I've had one reply email in the past two days. It's really frustrating :<
A friend of mine says there could be a couple of things, like RAM in the wrong slots etc. I'm reluctant to open it up though, unless there's some surefire way to fix it that way. Any thoughts there?

Don't expect anything from their support. They are just monkeys copy pasting messages to you.

What exactly do you mean it went to shizz? BSOD or crash? What does the BSOD error says? It should mention a driver name + error code.. Take of pic of it when you see it happen next, those numbers and code are important to know to find out the solution.

Earlier you said you uninstalled the drivers completely and then you were able to come on here, if that's the case then why do you think its the Ram? If you still think its ram, confirm it by running a memtest, if it shows errors, switch the slot and test again, if it still shows errors, replace your ram.
You have to do all that on your own, google for how to do it and instructions etc. I can only help with the drivers issue here and if you tell me the BSOD code etc. I'll point you to the problem.

Update:
Stay away from 320.18 versions of drivers.
> http://modcrash.com/nvidia-display-driv ... bS1ePnvtQs <
They are destroying the cards and the BSOD people are getting might be result of that.

As Seth said earlier, it's really a wonder how these retards at Nvidia release their drivers without actually testing them. My 760 came with the 320.18 drivers, glad I went for the 320.49 instead for the first install which were the latest at that time but people who dont really have internet access or were limited to 320.18 or might've just installed 320.18 coz 320.49 were not out at that time might've destroyed their own cards. Shame on Nvidia, again.

That's why new isn't always the best :)
they probably wanted to make quick money by releasing broken software, but indeed you should never install the drivers that come with the video card, no matter if its radeon or nvidia, always go to their website and download the latest.

What if 320.18 were the latest? :D
I bought the card about 2 months after its release but those who bought it as soon as it came out had no option other than 320.18 since drivers below that version won't recognize the 700 series cards without the inf hack :)
So guess when many cards died people only considered them to be DOA and RMA'd them which ultimately only affected Nvidia.

this is why i don't buy stuff that have just came out, you never know if its good or not, even if its trustable company, they may release shit sometimes. its best to wait few months and see reviews first, let the hardware testers test the stuff out and post some reviews, then you know if its safe enough to buy.
