i've heard so many good things and good rumors about asus, people keep saying "omg so good", but it really is NOT. as usual, it's because people are dumb and just parrot things without knowing what they are parroting.
i honestly don't even know why i have quite few asus things, but here's my experience with them.
I have 2 Asus motherboards:
1) Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
2) Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z
yes i know, both are quite old, but it doesn't matter. formula-z was my first serious gaming rig back in the days and asus bloats with their ROG (republic of gamers), which sounds appealing. it has lot of cool features, like the live overclocking feature on bios level. it works by connecting USB cable to special ROG connect port and then into another pc or laptop, then in other pc/laptop you install the software and you can adjust clocks live, without the need to shut down the pc. i tried it once and it's quite cool, it allows you to test fast to see which settings work.
but features are not everything.
first problem is that it takes SO LONG to boot from 0 to windows. it bloats with all those logos and has significantly longer hang-time than other motherboards.
for example i have some old asrock motherboard in dual-core pc and it boots up much faster, it's so fast that i have to bash the bios key (del i think) quite fast to even get into bios, but asus is made for imbeciles, so it gives lot of time for idiots to notice this "press del to enter bios" bla bla. and NO, there's no setting to speed-up this process.
same issue happens on z170 motherboard, it's so slow to start. it also keeps running those SMART checks for drivers, which drags it out even longer, this can be turned off, but it turns it back on on its own. it's so annoying.
but BIGGEST issue that gets on my nerves, is the RAM slot clips. i'm not going to repeat it here, while ago i posted about it on my Patreon here = https://www.patreon.com/posts/110034196
those clips are so annoying, my main PC keeps suffering from it all the time, almost every cold boot results in dislodged RAM, so programs keep randomly closing and sometimes i even get BSOD with random message, which is clearly because of RAM being dislodged. fucking imbecile whoever designed it. asus? more like "ass us". yet another popular company that has been made popular thanks to sheeple who don't have their own opinion, they just parrot and false advertise shit.
I also have Asus STRIX 7.1 headset, which i have basically never used, cuz it's that shit.
I made a review on it aswell.
Asus strix 7.1 headset review =
i bought it long ago, cuz i like true surround headsets, not like sheeple would understand the difference, but there's HUGE difference. with true surround headset you can hear DIRECTION of each sound, which is extremely important to me. when i play games, i want to hear which direction sound is coming from. i have always laughed at those sheeple who are spinning around in games like counter-strike, r6 siege ..etc, cuz they have stereo or some idiotic "virtual" surround that distorts audio to try and replicate surround, but those clearly don't work, cuz they keep spinning around to try and listen where sound is coming from.
often in shooters when i don't react to sounds, they think i can't hear, but i have no need to turn towards a wall if i hear enemy step behind it, looking at wall won't give me anything, since i can already hear the sound coming from behind me.
in many games surround sound has also saved me from being backstabbed, they think they're so smart, but they make some slight noise and based on that noise alone i'm able to turn and shoot them with pinpoint accuracy, without the need to look.
SO, in that sense, headset is good. speakers are spread out, which makes surround effect very realistic, better than in my razer tiamat 7.1, BUT the biggest issue are the earmuffs, they're HORRIBLE! i'm quite sure i mentioned it on review aswell. those earmuffs have basically no muffing effect at all, they have some stupid material in them.
secondly, they're very uncomfortable, that material is hard and uncomfy on your skin and starts to hurt after 30 mins or even less.
my ears are average in size-wise and not leaned outwards like some people's, but that headset rubs against endges of my ears as those muffs are not deep enough, which is extremely uncomfy and after a while those parts of my ears become sore and it literally hurts to wear them.
all those things combined, just makes it really annoying to use.
i don't understand who designed that headset, have they even wore it more than 1 minute? clearly .. NOT!
after 9 years i still have it sitting in original box, i have used them less than 10 hours total.
while my razer tiamat 7.1 is super comfy and muffs the background sounds really well. it's battlescarred and the plastic on top has broken many times, but i kust keep repairing it with pieces of plastic, hot glue and ducttape, i don't care how it looks like, it's super comfy and i see no reason to replace them just cuz piece of plastic breaks.
I also have Asus 4k monitor, which i made review on.
Asus PB287Q 28'' 4k monitor review =
this monitor was big mistake aswell. i don't know why i bought it. probably cuz it was around same price range as others, back when i bought it, 4k monitors were quite rare, not many used them. it was back in days where people talked shit about 4k monitors out of jealousy, they saying that there's not much difference between 4k and 1080p, which is total rubbish. it's just morons talking shit as usual.
there's HUGE difference between 4k and 1080p, specially if your monitor is 28 inch.
however there's not that big of a difference between 1440p and 4k. i play most games in 1440p and they're quite clear, even without AA.
ok so let's start with problems:
1) you can't turn off that autistic "hot plug" detection autism, it's the "feature" that is built into windows, graphics card, monitor and cable. that autism is still getting on my nerves, i often want to leave PC on, but i don't want my monitor to be on, so i physically turn monitor off, but this causes monitor to send signal to windows, saying that monitor is "disconnected" and then windows throws all my icons and windows around. if i have any full screen program running, it will most likely crash, cuz windows tries to force it from higher resolution to lower, cuz it tries to force it onto my secondary 1080p monitor. it's so annoying and i haven't found a way to disable it. i have tried for years, in GAYdows it's hard-coded. i have tried so many times and asked "experts" who just roll their eyes and have 0 idea what it even is ...
just recently i tried once more, i changed displayport stream from 1.2 to 1.1 (or maybe it was from 2.0 to 1.1?), doesn't matter what numbers, it has physical setting in the monitor itself. after i change that, it no longer worked. there was no signal .. and the fucking menu does NOT open when there's no signal ... i mean WHAT KIND OF MONITOR WONT LET YOU OPEN MENU WITHOUT SIGNAL INPUT???????????? what is this autism??
i had to dig up DP to HDMI cable and connect it via that, just to have signal, so i can change that autism back. holy shit that's so STUPID! WHO MADE THIS???
even my nearly 15 year old 1080p monitor lets me open the menu when there's NO signal, i can connect power to it and it says "no signal", but i can open menu and go thru options without the need of PC, but this asus monitor MUST have pc connected or you can't open menu.
2) this brings me to menu buttons, they are HIDDEN behind the monitor. lot of monitors have them at bottom, most have them on front as touch-sensitive buttons, but asus? NOPE! it has them BEHIND the monitor. it's so awckward to access them. it has 6 buttons (check review) and you have to press them based on feel, but you can only put 4 fingers on them at a time. so you have to press them based on feel, but another problem is that menu disappears very fast, so the time it takes you to find the right button by feel, you either misclick multiple times or can't find the right button, then menu disappears. who the fuck designed this autism?
and this menu is suppose to be accessed with ease, cuz it also has features such as built-in crosshair. it draws crosshair on your monitor for games that lack or don't allow it for whatever reason.
those buttons are really annoying, in my case, when i try to push those buttons, my hand also goes against my keyboard or mouse. it's a real challenge trying to press them, but those imbeciles who made it, clearly never tested it in real environment. they probably had it really high up and angled, so it's easy to press, but in real situation you don't put monitor like that, it's close to table and it becomes very hard getting your hand behind it. total autism!
my old 1080p monitor has much better buttons, touch-sensitive in front. you won't even see them, but it's super easy to press.
3) did i forget to mention that it takes AGES to boot the monitor? yes BOOT the monitor as in when i turn it on, it bloats with their asus logo. there's no way to bypass it. it takes about 10 seconds from the moment i press the button, to the moment i can see my pc desktop.
my old samsung monitor turns-on / boots in less than 3 seconds from the moment i touch the button.
4) some joker has built the D/C adapter inside monitor and it seems like it's near top left corner, what kind of imbecile does that?
why is it a problem you ask? because it OVERHEATS, due this i have darker area near top left. it means backlight has burned out in that area. it's not big enough to make it unusable, but you can notice it in brighter areas. it's like "dark cloud" over that area.
i can physically feel that from about 50% til top of monitor on left side, it's really hot compared to rest of monitor. if i put my hand on monitor, it feels pretty much room temperature all over, except that top left part. this is NOT due fault, it has always been like it, cuz they have some D/C transformer in that place (or whatever it is, it heats up the monitor too much).
what kind of a trolled up autistic imbecile would designed a monitor like that? if you have built-in DC adapter, you put it at BOTTOM YOU FUCKING INBREAD DUMBTARDED RETARD!!
you put it on bottom, because of weight distribution and so it won't cause overheating issues, which it CLEARLY has!
5) it also has other issues with power, i had to turn brightness down, cuz it started to blink. it seems like the DC adapter is in so bad place that it's been overheating and can't output that much power anymore.
6) bottom of the monitor's frame, is so badly designed that all the dust and dirt can get stuck there, it's not properly against the monitor. it's near impossible to clean, there's probably hard strip of dirt. i tried using toothbrush, but it won't really get it out from there either. it's not a big issue, but over time it starts to push the edge outwards and it might eventually start causing some issues.
literally one of the worst monitors i have ever had, but at this point i'm not rich enough to throw it out til it completely breaks. it still does the job.
while that old samsung monitor i have, only has 1 dead pixel after 15 years of use, however it has other issue with sockets on back. socket is slightly broken, so it keeps flickering/blinking, but i "fixed" it by just taping wires, so they have no movement in them.
this is common issue that most monitors have, sockets are horizontally and most people have no brain to tape the wires as they don't understand basic particle vibrations. they don't realize that if you connect a wire and it's yanking down with its own weight, then particle vibrations is enough to slowly degrade the socket and wire over time, which is why lot of cables break "on their own" and most people are too stupid to understand why it happens.
you should NEVER leave cables hanging down on their own weight.
surprisingly .. asus monitor has its sockets facing downwards, which is only good design it has. altho those sockets are too close to the bottom, so they might get in the way if you lower it too much.
if it was up to me, i'd put sockets always in back middle of monitor, facing downwards. this is easy to access and this way cables won't yank down on their own weight.
you might say .. but if they face downwards, how is that any different? if you ask that, you have 0 common sense, but i try to explain anyways.
it's because there's no force trying to break the cord/wire, that's why. if your cord is connected into horizontally facing socket, then gravity pulls it DOWN, which creates 90-degree angle. even tho cords/cables/wires are quite light, it is enough to degrade them overtime. all matter vibrates all the time, unless you're in absolutel 0-temp, but computers wouldn't even work in that environment, since electricity would quite literally freeze aswell and there would be no particle movement.
so as long as there's any energy in particles, they are working towards degrading the wire. so when wire is under 90-degree angle, it keeps degrading fast.
however when wire is plugged into upwards facing socket, it only tries to pulls it apart lenght-wise and it would probably take thousands of years before anything would degrade and break.
maybe not that long, best example is that old houses need re-wiring, cuz even tho wires are inside the walls and don't move, they still have particle movement aka sub-atomic particle vibration in them, this combined with other vibrations (like if truck drives past your house or when you walk on floor) is still enough to degrade the wires, this is why wires break even if nobody is touching them.
it's like putting sugar in your coffee or tea, if stir it, then it mixes fast, but if you let it sit there, then it takes quite long for it to mix. hours or even days. it's all basic physics (it is to me).
so if wire is under 90-degree angle, then it will break a lot faster.
if you want to fix this on any device, tape the wire. it's best to make a turn so wire is facing downwards. like make that 90-degree turn and force wire to face downwards, then tape the turn itself, so wire is loosely hanging down and puts no pressure on the socket itself.
that's also why most cables have this hardened rubber thingy near the connector, i bet most people don't know what its for, but that's made to counter-act exactly what i explained. it's suppose to spread the vibration/movement and significantly prolong its lifetime.
by taping wires, you do the same thing, you take the stress off one single spot (like a socket) and spread it across a much bigger segment of wire.
in fact i had same on my razer headset, i made 2 U turns with wire, i hot glued the first U turn and other one i taped, this way wire has more room to move and won't "choke" and break.
it's hard to explain this to anyone who doesn't have common sense, i've been doing this since i was like 5 years old maybe, i was modifying RC toys and such, i realized it quite fast why cables break so fast. like adults always breaking cables on game controllers, cuz they hold it under wrong angle or twist it while playing .. i have never had this issue. i still have PS1 and its controllers somewhere and its still working. no broken cables.
ANYWAY -- i suggest STAY AWAY from ASUS! their products aren't as good as those "experts" advertise them to be. imbeciles like this techtips have no idea how computers even work, they only bloat with shit. that imbecile doesn't even know how to apply thermal paste, but lot of sheep watch his autism videos and buy products based on what he recommends .... i guess i didn't think much either back then, honestly i don't even remember WHY i decided to buy so much asus shit. it really isn't worht it, total garbage company. it's like ferrari .. expensive and shit. you only pay for the name.
there are lot of much cheaper companies that make much better products.
just read user reviews (not some retards youtubers) and always read 1-star reviews, if most of them bring out same exact issue, then most likely product is bad. i know there are lot of idiots who leave 1 star for no obvious reason, like some imbecile bought wrong type of lightbulb on amazon (bought EU socket for UK) and then whines "1 star! it doesn't fit" ... fucking imbecile didn't read description and didn't even look at photos.
it had 2 product types, one with UK socket and one with EU socket, that retard imbecile fucktard chose the EU socket and then whines and leaves 1 star cuz of his own extreme stupidity!
you have to shiv thru reviews and make sure you don't count those imbecile reviews into the mix, only look if people say like "power button breaks very easily" or that "power adapter broke after short time". if lot of reviews say same thing, then you can be quite sure it's not just people's stupidity, but it's actually bad product.
ASUS: is it really good? nope .. not really! here's why ...
