## What's infinity?

non-computer related scientific discussions go here. how does stuff work, how far is moon from sun, how do monorail trains work ..etc

### What's infinity?

Allright so this thing is on my mind for a long time. We use it everywhere...

In math, in science, in religion, in basicly everywhere, but still i think we dont really know what it is.

Lets start with maths. Imagine u have 1\$. And now u get the half of it. So u have 1.5\$ now. Do it again. 1.75\$. Do it "infinity" times, and u will get 2\$ by definition. But how is that possible? Infinity means that u add something endlessly so how is it possible that u dont get "infinity" \$? If u add everytime a little bit, it should be more everytime so how is it that it sill has a limit?

In religion (catholic), infinity is the final destination. If u die, u either go to hell or heaven. Either way u will stay there for infinity time, doesnt matter what u do. To think about it, it is not as cool as it seems at first. Could u really have "joy" for "infinity" time? Or is it possible to suffer for eternity? I think existing for eternity is probaly the worst thing that can happen to u. But its just my oppinion mybe, we humans are not meant to be able to imagine such things, but still i wonder.

### Re: What's infinity?

you don't make one bit of sense.
half of 1 is 0.5, not 1.5 and i don't understand anything you are saying. add 0.5 to 1.5 and you get 1.75 ???
and where you get that 2 ?
and infinity times ? don't you mean infinite times ? check what you are saying, by making 1 misspell in each word, results are that no one understands what you are saying.

infinite by definition is what never ends, it's that simple, what is there not to understand ?
this is why infinity symbol is 8 sideways, because if you think of it as a path you walk, you will be walking it forever, it will never end, you will die before road ends.
in theory it is repeating, but it is just a symbol, because by walking figure of 8, road never runs out.

it's simple, Infinity only exists in theory and in mathematics, but not in real life.
for example if you divide a certain number that cannot be divided with the specific number.
like 10 divided by 3 is 3.33333333333 x infinite times. so in theory, you would have infinite number of 33333 after the .
but in real life, if you are trying to split 3 of something, you can go only that far with it ...
because at one point, it becomes down to so small scale, that matter cannot be split anymore. like you can split an atom, but then again you would end up getting nuclear reaction.

idiots can believe whatever they want. if some moron thinks that infinite is until you die, then it is not infinite, then its retardness.
again, infinity is possible only in theory, but never in real life. even universe is not infinite.

also some people confuse infinity with endless, but those are completely different things.

hahhaa : D

"Lets start with maths. Imagine u have 1\$. And now u get the half of it. So u have 1.5\$ now." -Legu

"half of 1 is 0.5, not 1.5" -Sethioz

So lets see. "half of 1 is 0.5" U see it very correctly, it is indeed 0.5.

"add 0.5 to 1.5 and you get 1.75 ???" -Sethioz

Nope, by writting "do it again" i didnt mean to add 0.5 again, i meant to do the same arithmetic opperation. But okay i will try to explain it as good as i can.

U have 1\$. I think so far everyone understands it. 1\$ is 1\$ doesnt matter how u look at it. Now take the half of the 1\$. It is magicaly 0.5. Now take the half of 1, or 0.5, or 1/2 or call it what u want and add it to the original number (1, remember?). So now, u have 1.5\$! Now if u take the half of 0.5, which is 0.25 and add it to the number which we got before (1.5), we have 1.75\$! So to make it obvious we can write

1 + (1/2) + ((1/2)/2) + (((1/2)/2)/2) ..... and so on. If we do that for a while lets do it for 5 elements.

1 + 0.5 + 0.25 + 0.125 + 0.0625 = 1,9375

"and where you get that 2 ?"-Sethioz ... Hmm thats a very good question! Not really :/ If you do this process infinite long, (process= takin 1 and then adding the values wich can calculated before with the method i have shown) u will get eventually 2.

Now that we hopefuly did understand this thing, i think a happy picture is needed.

"and infinity times ? don't you mean infinite times ?"
I mean the correct one, me no english.

"infinite by definition is what never ends, it's that simple, what is there not to understand ?"
Im having a hard time imagining things that never end, and imagining that something that never ends (see beer example) can result in a number. (Adding numbers together and it is 2).

I hope it is easier to understand now.

And now u get the half of it

if i get HALF of 1, i get 0.5. NOT 1.5.
you should say:

you have 1, then you take half of 1 and add it to 1 and you get 1.5.
not some blabber like you have 1 and you get half of it and get 1.5.

yes i understood what you meant now, but before you made no sense.
you clearly said take 1 and then take half of it and you get 1.5, you never said anything about adding that 0.5 to 1.

there are lot of formulas that end up nowhere, that keep on going and going. as i said, 10 / 3 = 3.333333 and it goes like that infinite times.
