The Next Generation

Post by KEN »

Couldn't resist posting this. It appeared on my facebook newsfeed xD

Image

And there's no end to it..

Image

Later it went like this:

Mio: well why assume there were parentheses?

Dim----: its because there were not have parentheses so i give that... how about your answer??

Good job, coz there are no brackets just give it some rofl xD

8
as far as i know, in math you first to multiply / divide first and then rest, so 2x2 = 4 then +2 = 6 and +2 =8
..but to me it makes no sense, cuz if i walk on a path, i don't skip half of it magically .. walk in middle, then magically appear in beginning and then at back, so i would go from beginning, but that's just what i've seen / heard about math, that first the multiply and divide, then + and -.

Yeah ofc it's 8. Someone said in the comments later that BODMAS / DMAS / MDAS is not explained everywhere. I don't know why is that? Here and in many places it's the very basics after a child learns to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

It's done coz 2+2x2+2 if done from left to right gives 10,
If we just re-arrange the same thing as 2x2+2+2 it gives 8 from the exact same equation. It has to be same, it cant be different for the same reason 2+3 is 5 and has to be 5 even if its 3+2.

They didn't just decide to divide and multiply first and then add subtract, it says there in 2+2x2+2 ( 2 units plus 2 units multiplied into 2 plus 2 more units ).
This is where brackets come in, if the multiplication is to be done by the addition of 2+2 and not just one 2 then it has to be (2+2) x 2 + 2.
Here we solve to get 4x2 + 2.
That's what BODMAS is.

B rackets
O f
D ivision
M ultiply
A dd
S ubtract

Brackets are solved first and subtraction at last.
Of is also sort of multiply but it's mostly % and is done before division, like:

Find 8% OF 100 and divide it by 2.
So 8/100 * 100 / 2
8/2
4

Same if it's 2 + 8% of 200 + 2,
it will be 2 + 8/100 * 200 + 2,
2 + 16 + 2
20

It's bad that these are not taught everywhere, these are the basics.

That doesn't change the fact, that its RETARDED!
i only knew how retards do it, so i said that "correct" answer is 8. I STILL do not understand who's the idiot who thinks that math should be done from middle or end to beginning and then jump to end again .. i mean WHAT THE FUCK!?

No wonder base physics and math is all wrong and humans never get anywhere with their false physics lol.

i mean seriousl WHY is it done that way? it is common fucking sense to start from the fucking beginning!!! not bump around like a pinball.
sooo .. 2+2x2+2 should be 10!
if idiots say it should be 2x2 +2 +2 .. why not do it like this then > 2+2=4 > 2+2=4 > 4x4=16!

..this really doesn't fit in my head, who was the bump-brain who came up with such idiotic math lol, it's like lightbulb going on in the brain "OOOH why don't we first do the stuff somewhere in middle and then we jump to end and then we jump to beginning and then we have answer! .. instead of doing it from start to end"

lol its not retarded you just don't get it either. BODMAS is a rule.
They are not saying to go solve the middle thing first, they are saying to pay attention to what the problem really means.

(2+2) x (2+2) would be 16 but not 2 + 2 x 2 + 2

2+2x2+2
Read what they are asking from the above equation in english.
They are not asking the total of 2+2 to be multiplied into 2, they are asking just 2 to be multiplied into 2 which just happens to be in the middle.
If they were to ask the total of 2+2 to be multiplied into 2, then they would say (2+2)x2 + 2

Isn't this explained everywhere? and the difference between [ , { and ( ?
How will you solve [ 5+2{3x(2+2) } ] ?

This is what i meant, i don't understand why there is BODMAS rule, its stupid. if you KNOW you have to multiply first, you fucking put it in the beginning .. and start from start lol.

At this point, I would like to mention something that might change the current "view" of some about this topic.

I would like to mention the IEEE 754 standard. See since we are all super cool computer guyz, i think it is important to know how data gets saved.

For people who would like to more about the subject and thus understand more : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_floating_point

I will start with a simple example. How much is 2^2222222222 ? It is certainly a huge huge number, but it is not something we could not calculate if we had enough ressources. The problem is that registers have a limited amount of ressources. Lets say 32bit. So to determine how much 2^22222222 is, we see if it is possible to visualize this number with only 32bit. It is obviously not. Therefor we say it is infinity. We could also say its NaN (not a number). Or we could say its pony. It is just a concept. Some companies use different concepts. It all comes down to implementation.

Now lets go bk to the original thing.
2 + 2 x 2 + 2
Obviously 8, if there are not other rules given. If there are no other known interfaces that we must recognize. If, however, you are part of a educational facitliy where it makes sense to use BODMAS or other sets of rules, the solution might be different. Just as if you ask someone to read "apple". You might read it as apple, but there are some people from islam who would read it as elppa.

I hope this helps to understand more about what Ken tried to explain.

Re: The Next Generation

to me it's all nonsense and idiotism. it is common sense, that if you first want to multiply something, you do that first, but for example:

you have 3 stores that have made exactly same amount of money during the year and you want to know the total sum.
so you add all the sales 1+2+3+4 ...etc to get the total amount that 1 store have made and then at end you do x3 because it is 3 times that, but according to BODMAS you would end up with wrong amount, because you would multiply first, see thats WRONG.

I say it is common sense and there is no need to complicate things with brackets and BODMAS. ok brackets might be needed if you want to write down a long formula, but .. blah .. it brings me back to that whole physics and math is WRONG. humans are based on ancient idiots like einstein and they bow down to him and don't want to learn anything, they think that einstein knew it all and follow him like idiots, they're forgetting that things like BODMAS and all those formulas were invented by people who did not have computers and calculators.

nowdays there is no need to write down long formulas with brackets and rules, it was necessary back in the days, because only way to write something down was on a paper .. and on paper it looks better for eye if you have brackets and follow a "rule" to solve the formula, but it is not needed nowdays.

well im not saying einstein had low IQ, he sure had high IQ, but put him into year 2013 and he would look at all this like a caveman, it would take him less time to get used to all this than to most other people, but what im saying .. is that he would be stupid in 2013. if einstein would live in 2013, he would do a lot of things differently, THATS MY POINT, but nowday idiot scientists just can't see it, they follow his exact methods and this is why they never get anywhere! They need to think "what would einstein do right now" not what he did back in the days when he lived. i'm sure that all those people who made these math rules and formulas would have done it completely differently if they were to live in 2013 ... this is what i mean.

you would end up with wrong amount
See, that is the problem here. While you are right in a sense, how do you justify "wrong"? Because it is not the expected result that describes the laws of nature? Sometimes, wrong or right have different value from the one you would normaly assume, if the environment is adjacent.

How much is for an example 0 -1 = ?

You might say it is -1. But what if i say it is +1. Because 0 is the set of all numbers. Add all numbers [ +1 + (-1), +2 + (-2) + 3 + (-3)....+ infinity + (-infinity)] and you get zero. Now if you remove an element from zero (the set zero), the set zero will be still big, but less than before. To show the loss, zero becomes +1, the omnidrirectional element to -1.

Of course this is not substandard maths, but regardless i hope this idea helps you to visualize the illusion of justification.

Nope. According to BODMAS the correct way of doing it will be (sale 1 + sale 2 + sale 3 + ....) x 3
see the difference?

They didn't just randomly make the rule, whatever sale / transaction is taking place in numbers: 2 + 2 x 2 + 2 / 2 means that the multiplication and division WAS DONE BEFORE adding 2 units and (2 + 2) x 2 + 2/2 means that the multiplication of goods WAS DONE AFTER they added 2 units to existing 2 units of stock.

Suppose you have 2 apples and now you buy another apple then you multiply 1 of them by cutting them from middle, so now you have 2 pieces out of the 1 apple ( x2 ) and 2 complete apples, how many pieces of apple do you have?
is it:
a) 2 + 1 x 2
3x2
6 ?

or,
b) 2+1x2
2+2
4 ?

The (2+1) x 2 would mean that all 3 apples were mutiplied into 2,
2+1x2 would mean that only 1 of them was multiplied into 2.
Can't explain it better than this.

yes yes the brackets, well I make my own rules > COMMON SENSE!
that's why nowday graduation students are still so STUPID, because they follow the formula without knowing WHY they do it. i never follow anything, unless i know WHY.
so many people who know math, have no idea why they even do things the way they do it, if they would have to break it down and explain things, they could not. they can give you the answer, but they have no idea how they got it.

Those are the one's who care only about grades and getting a shitty job but its still in every way better than getting the answer totally wrong or like the person on the screenshot who said the answer was 16.

exactly, but "those" people cover 99% of world .. unfortunately :(
..but it's not about them caring about a shitty job or grades, it is general IQ of people, their brain is not capable for more.

anyway, answer is exactly what you want it to be. In my mind, 8 is not correct either. i mean exactly what i said, answer is what YOU WANT it to be!
If only all scientists would realize it, things in world would evolve a lot faster.
it's same princible with "years", i mean .. who said that "it is year 1" ? and WHY are we so blindly following it? those are the things, that only very few see and think about (like me).
WHY are there 24 hours in day? why not 100? why not 10?
I mean keeping day still same length, it would be like F and C in temperature. just different units to measure length of day.

People need to let go of the past and start creating their own stuff. stop following some ancient farts!

So, from now on, everyone can post everywhere? Would it not be a bit of...chaos?

I believe, that it makes sense to agree on a certain standard. This way people can communicate with eachother. If you say "apple" peopel will know what you mean. If everyone just used a language they wanted to, nobody could understand anyone...

indeed it is going bit offtopic, but kind a in topic too. it's still about WHY you solve it the way you do, why is answer 8 and not 10 or 16 or whatever.
i agree that this is why we have language, but that doesn't mean we have to keep it that way, if there is a better way of writing and pronouncing things, like "because" could be "cuz", then why not?
