yes thats true, i have seen tons of discussions where ppl ask if it is possible to use normal USB stick in PS2.
the problem is not hardware, problem is in PS2's software (maybe some new ps2 versions read any usb drive). problem is that games and ps2 bios does not read the normal USB flash sticks (it does not have normal USB drivers), i do not have special ps2 compatible stick to test, but i think that there is some special system files on them.
However if you have modchip you can still use USB drives to backup your data from memory card.
What you do is get "codebreaker" and run it, then simply insert any USB drive and access it thru codebreaker, that simple.
however it does not allow you to save games on it, because games still does not support it (exept Gran Turismo 4 i think, which should read any type of USB and allow you to save taken pictures there).
anyways you can try other things too, like gameshark maybe or AR MAX (action replay max).
Tested with cracked CodeBreaker v9.2
