How to keep your data SAFE & delete deleted data

Post by Sethioz »

well lately ive became really PARANOID and its good :) you may never know if somebody wants to gain access to your data. So ive been looking for tools that can make my computer safe as fort knox. im not afraid that somebody hacks in it, but more like gets access to HDD. Some ppl think that when you delete a file and empty recycler then its gone, well its NOT. Here's some info and tools.
Restoration - this tool can restore deleted files. and it works quite well i'd have to say.
-so how you prevent this from happening ?!
Destroy it! - is one rare and good program. its a file shredder. it deletes file so they CAN NOT be restored in any way.
-however some sensitive data is stored into ram and also in pagefile and normal computer users have no control over it.
BCWipe - This tool can be used to delete delete files. It wipes free space in your computer. it means that it deletes those deleted restoreable files. So they cannot be restored. it takes quite a lot of time if you want to be 100% sure that it really CAN NOT be restored.

now this leaves everything else. the files you have currently in pc. your projects, sensitive data (passwords, accounts..etc)
you can use this:
TrueCrypt - this can encrypt your data. it can either make a encrypted virtual drive that appears as a file or even encrypt whole HDD so you need to enter your password each time before windows starts. It also makes a CD/DVD that is used to restore your HDD in case truecrypt should fail in any way, but again .. you still need your password. without password you CAN NOT retrieve your data.
I made a virtual drive for test. It is really good. it can only accessed thru the truecrypt and it has lots of hotkeys. with hotkey you can dismount and close it. so if you need to quickly hide your data.
It also encrypts RAM and pagefile or disables it. I have not done any research on it, but it seems its so secure that even government can use this to protect their data. it also have options like: timeout. so if you set it to like 10 mins and theres no activity on virtual drive for 10 mins, it will be dismounted. so if u rush away from your pc and leave it on, then nobody can read it after the specified time.
but if you forget your password, then your FUCKED ! so dont do that. ofcourse if you use WEAK password it can be cracked easily. using wordlists or some bruteforce.

I think that best way to keep your data safe is to encrypt whole HDD.

yeah i tought that some ppl find it intresting and even unbeliavable. 95% of computer users or even more are not even aware that you can restore deleted files and that you can even get passwords from RAM or pagefile or some cache. Even if you pull out the power cord on computer or wreck it..then some data is still stored in RAM or in some cache, which usually is some sensitive data.
I gotta say that turning off pagefile was bad idea. Games work fine, but some programs will crash. It doesnt actually matter if i have pagefile or not, because my HDD is encrypted and that includes pagefile. I really like this encryption...there is no way that somebody can pull anything out of my computer without me wanting it. cracking my password would take...hmm .. 100 years on like 10000 computers ? ...i think MORE. my computer can do like 4mil passwords per sec. top computers can do like 40mil passwords per sec i think. but when i bruteforce 16 character all password...haha it would take 10000 years or more and my pass is WAY over 30 characters.
