use gamepad (controller, joystick etc) to control pc/winamp

Post by Sethioz »

originally i did it to control my winamp remotly without using keyboard/mouse, i was trying to find plugin or something like that for winamp that allows me to use gamepad buttons as hotkeys...but didn't find anything. this method can be used to control your entire computer with single gamepad. It works for all game controllers...like joysticks, wheels, pedals, analog controllers..etc.

Actually you need only one tool and its called
xpadder
with this lil tool you can assign any keyboard action to gamepad.
This is how i used it to control winamp (also mouse)
it also allows you to make toggle key for set 1, 2, 3 and 4. It means if your controller does not have enought buttons you can change the set so you can have up to 4 functions under 1 button.

First you need to make a layout for your controller.
once your controller is chosen click on layout
window appears. now go thru all of the tabs. it tells you how to add buttons.
you can drag and drop all the buttons (you can draw the whole controller)

to control winamp:
if you set single key as hotkey in winamp then it may mess up your pc usage. like when you press ctrl+f (find in most programs) and you set it as hotkey in winamp too then it messes up everything.
So its wise to set hotkeys in winamp ..something like this:
ctrl+alt+s = stop
its very unlikely tht you use this combination anywhere else.
then in xpadder set this combination under 1 button. - simply click on the button where you want to add it, then choose desired combination. (choosing shift, ctrl, alt does not close-choose window, but waits for another input .. like shift+)
Only thing i couldn't figure out is how to change playlists. I can control mouse with gamepad and choose another playlist..but it would be easier to just browse between playlists, like next - previous playlist. i guess winamp doesn't have such option.
