Common internet connection problem - details and fix

Post by Sethioz »

This bug is about the default faulty DNS servers. When person gets internet connection, then their computer automatically uses default DNS server, which is provided be their ISP (internet service provider).
Those DNS servers are very often faulty and does not work as they should. on some reason, they conflict with certain routers or modems. mostly they conflict with routers, such as speedtouch and many other makes.

some ppl dont have this problem at all, but some have it very often. so now when computer/laptop is connected to that router, then it automatically uses ISPs default DNS servers. after a while, it gets stuck and as a result you will lose connectivity to http/https protocols, because this is what DNS server does, it resolves domains to IPs.

when this happens, only choice for a common computer user is to reboot their modem/router and it fixes itself after a while.

Reason: at this moment i do not have detailed explanation for this bug. it only occurs with certain routers and modems. on some reason router gets "stuck" and causes this. sometimes it does come back after a while, but its rare. ive had this issue myself, when i was using Speedtouch 780wl router.

Fix:
permanent fix, is to change your DNS servers from default, to something else (google for DNS servers).
I highly recommend to use OpenDNS servers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

i have never had problems with OpenDNS. if you want to make sure that those are right, check their website > http://www.opendns.com/

How to change DNS servers:

Windows xp:
1. start
2. control panel
3. network and internet connections (skip if using classic view)
4. network connections
5. right click your active connection and choose properties
6. scroll down to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and double click on it
7. below, choose "use the following DNS server addresses"
8. insert the two OpenDNS servers there and click "OK" everywhere to close windows

If you wish to change them for vista or win 7, then you must google, i dont support crap :)
