Re: translating using hex editors
umm. so basically what you want is GBA game emulator in english ?
as usual i suggest to search for the english version (google, emule, torrent sites, sharing sites..etc)
the file you included, gba.sim, thats the emulator for mp4 player ? I opened it, but it doesn't look like you can edit it..i mean translate. or maybe because chinese letters are total mess ?!
It maybe because chinese does not show in ASCii. because in the gba.sim i did saw few words, like closed..etc. however there is one way to still replace those chinese words. you have to convert them into HEX instead of looking them in ASCii.
how ? write (if you can, if not then paste) a chinese word into a new .txt file and then open it in HEX editor, then you can see how this chinese word looks like in hex.
then you can open gba.sim in HEX again and search for that hex string and then replace it with the english word (convert the word into HEX too), use replace command.
Best hex editor for such job is XVI32 (its in my download section and free).
this is only thing i can think of right now. but what was your problem ? i assume it was about not finding the chinese words ?
NOTE - adding bytes into the file may corrupt it. it means if you replace 4 bytes word with like 5 bytes word or 2 bytes word with 6 bytes..etc. however if you replace 4 bytes word with 2 bytes, then you can simply use "00 00" at end of that 2 bytes word and it will work.

Re: translating using hex editors
Thanks for the responce, theres no english versions of the emulator, its only available in chinese but i dont understand chinese so thats no good, i use hex workshop which is good im pretty experienced in using it but yeah as you said i cant find the chinese characters in the editor iv even tried searching using a translated chinese word but still nothing.
There only really 4 or 5 words i need to translate in this emulator and thats fast save / fastload / sound / exit there are a few others but they are not needed.
A guy successfully translated a snes emulator for my mp4 device and he said he used notepad++ and textpad but i dont see how he did it like that at all.

Re: translating using hex editors
well if you can, then post a chinese word here (in chinese characters ofcourse) and i can take a look at it.
as about using text editor...he is either lieing or did not mention something. you can't edit such programs with text editor.
why ? because text editors does not reconize lot of characters and when you save, they will corrupt the file. this is why HEX editor can be used to edit programs. in HEX its simple value and no symbols (which are not reconized by text editors).
only way he could have done it is to extract that .sim file and then edit and then put it back together.
about HEX. hex workshop is slow and quite messy too. xvi32 has all the features you need and its the fastest hex editor ive tried so far. it can replace millions of strings in just few seconds. in hex workshop it would take like hours.

Re: translating using hex editors
Hex work shop runs fine on my laptop, it depends what system you have for how fast it runs, and the hex editor you mentioned is very very basic and does not have anywhere near the amount of options hex work shop does, and hex work shop menu maybe messy but its display is far from it xvi32 has a rubbish display but neat menu because it doesnt have many options, anyway im going to speak to the guy that translated previous emulators and see if i can get the answers from him, thanks for the help.Sethioz wrote:well if you can, then post a chinese word here (in chinese characters ofcourse) and i can take a look at it.

Re: translating using hex editors
well im pretty sure he extracted that .sim file somehow and then edited the part that contains language. and then putted it back together. ive edited lot of games like this...need to extract the game files first and then edit in normal .txt editor and then put back together.
you probably like hex workshop because its colored lol. actually those colored rows make it only worse and confusing. it shows 2 byte rows, which is NOT the way how hex should be showed. HEX is showed in 16byte lines and thats the way it should be showed, not the way hex workshop shows it. besides all this colored stuff and extra look only uses more resources.
*try to replace something in a 500mb file with hex workshop and see how fast it goes

oh well i still say XVI32 is better.
anyways to the point..i really can't help like this, because i havent seen the program running. can you make some screenshots of the part that needs translating ? or just type the words here.

Re: translating using hex editors
umm i meant brazilian version.. cuz i can't do chinese characters, so its useless. if you can actually paste one of those chinese words here, then it would help OR the shot of brazilian version (or a brazilian word that it contains).
why on earth are you not using the attachment box for screenshots ?
