Windows XP (pro)- bug in wireless network connection manager

Post by Sethioz »

Bug is in the "Wireless Network Connection" manager. The place where in XP you can see your wireless networks.

Bug:

when 2 or more WAPs (wireless access points) have same name, then they show up as one.
for example if you have 2 WAPs in range, one is secured (locked) and other unsecured (open for public), then biggest problem yet is that it will show it as secured and you never know that you actually have public WAPs in range.

Fix:

as far as i know, there is no official fix for this. i have SP3 installed and this bug still exist, so there is no official fix i assume, but if somebody finds one, then please feel free to post it here.

unofficial fix: use some 3rd party wireless manager. like "Wifi Hopper". Wifi Hopper not only shows them seperatly, but it also shows way more info. signal graph, channel, mac address of WAP..etc. and ofcourse it has connection manager.
NOTE - when using 3rd party connection manager, then your windows default manager will not work. so don't panic. sometimes its even necessery to reboot your system after using 3rd party wireless manger to be able to use windows default manager again.
as about wifi hopper, its only necessery to exit (not minimize to tray) wifi hopper and then windows manager will work again.
