umm you installed it into same partition ? if you installed it into same partition, then how can you even choose which one to boot ? on either way..if its in same partition or not. simply try to delete other files. if you can't then use "destroy it!" (its on my private downloads).
i think i had xp and win2000 in same partition long time ago and somehow it gave me option at start which windows to boot up. so later i simply deleted 2000. well i had 2 different windowses so not same.
how can you install 2 xp's into same partition anyways ? do you have 2 folders ? like "WINDOWS" and "WINDOWS1" ?
usually you can't install 2 of them, because if there is other xp present, even if its corrupted, then new installation either repairs previous installation, deletes it or replaces the previous files.

so if you have only one WINDOWS folder and it's size is around 4gb, then you don't have 2 of them (default xp pro is around 4gb). or did you install other one into other partition, then it would show as seperate HDD.

ah yes you somehow installed them into same partition. i guess you using the custom xp ? customized with n-lite ? it should be impossible to do that with DEFAULT windows xp (it means without any tweaks or 3rd party tools)

anyways don't edit your posts, this way other ppl know what was the problem too, just reply.

ok few more questions. can you boot into both windowses ? in the selection screen when you choose 1st or 2nd..will they both work ?
a) if both works, then boot into "WINDOWS" and then simply delete the WINDOWS.0 folder.
b) if only one works, then simply delete the other windows folder.

NOTE - you should first check which is which.
to do so, go to your HDD root.
in windows explorer click 'tools' - folder options - view - show hidden files and folders
now you can see boot.ini files in your root folder. open it with text editor.
there it shows which windows is which. you can then change the line to make it CLEAR so you know which one is which.

Code: Select all

WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
this is the line you can modify. you should have 2 of them. WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" and WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" so change last one to like WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 0"

its easy. you simply can't delete the one that has been booted. so if you hit 'del' key on one of them and it says cannot delete, then check your recycler if it deleted some files or not. if so, then select them all 'right click' and hit restore. so no harm done. and now hit 'del' key on other windows folder. IF it says cant delete, then it means 2 installations are conflicting, but i doubt it happens.

c) now here's lil bit more risky way, well not really, but it should work. you could try to boot into "WINDOWS" in safe-mode with cmd, even if its not functioning properly you should be able to boot in safe-mode with cmd.
-first get "Total Commander"
-now when booted in cmd mode, run total cmdr (make sure you booted into WINDOWS not WINDOWS.0)
-copy ALL files from "WINDOWS.0" folder into "WINDOWS" folder, so it replaces them all.
-now modify boot.ini and delete the WINDOWS.0 one.

NOTE - once again if both of them work fine, then you should boot into WINDOWS and just delete WINDOWS.0
why ? because i had same thing with my custom windows, installation messed up so i had to install again and it made another folder, then i was using WINDOWS.0 and some programs had problems with it, they didn't want to install and also some programs didn't work at all, because some programs are using WINDOWS default folder to function.

Well now im so far i fucked up my pc i forgot to check what windows i am using. i was using the windows.0 and whit destroy it i deleted everything so nothing basicly worked when it finished lol then it asked me to insert the cd to repair itself i was like fuck you i dont need another windows. Restarted  and then it needed some hll.dll etc something like that! ok anywho finished the installion of the other windows and copyed all the files from there ok then i got my original windows to work .oomga. but its looked like win 98 or something :S then i tryed to go to the internet to fix it. goddamn i cant go to the internet because i dont have NET Framework.i dunno what to do anymore because i need the files. Cant format whatsoever. So basicly i will just use my old pc till i can figure something out! .blah. Installing this framework wont help me alot because i have like 15k of files missing .oomga. i dunno meybe you have some fresh ideas because i was fucking bummed when it happened.

well i did say that it probably using WINDOWS.0, because it was the latest you installed.
just install it again. let it make WINDOWS.1 or WINDOWS.0 ..whatever. just as long as it works.
this NET framework is not the internet. it is used by some programs, but has nothing to do with internet connection.

anyways once you get into this new installation, COPY all files from this current (windows that works) windows folder into "WINDOWS" folder. and i mean COPY, not move. now change boot.ini as i said before and rename them so you know which one is which.
now restart and try to boot into "WINDOWS". If you did it right, then it should boot into it. im not 100% sure where does windows keep registry, but its either on HDD root folder or in WINDOWS (i maybe wrong in this point, so dont whine on me if i made mistake), but im quite sure that registry will not be problem if 2 windowses are installed into same partition (i mean same windows, not differ).

IF it doesn't work, then boot into this current windows again and DELETE that "WINDOWS" folder, then simply install windows again. then it will install into WINDOWS again. now boot into WINDOWS and delete all other windows folder you have there (windows.0, windows.1 that maybe created..etc). this method WILL work, because thats what i did when i had same thing with my custom xp.

NOTE - just make sure you first edit the NAME in boot.ini, so you know which one is which. and DO NOT change anything else, but

Code: Select all

the NAME. don't change folder name or anything, just the description ! description is as follows:
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" if you have this, then it means this is the normal folder. you should have
WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" too. so make it like WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 0" or whatever you want. like XP0 ..etc.
