Gaming PC / Laptop discussion - post your specs and stuff

Post by Sethioz »

i think i have few threads like this, but im just curious about some things.

Dual core 2.8ghz
3gb DDR2 RAM
GeForce 1GB GT240 SDDR3

its weird, that with this hardware im not getting amazing results at all. cpu is not the best, but its still good.
i played test drive unlimited 2 and i still get annoying lag in some areas, i dont understand whats causing this. i had 512mb 9500GT before and i had same kind of lag in same places, so huh ?!
in fact, upgrading video card didnt do much good in tdu2. same settings, same lag.
any1 else played tdu2 ?

while in prototype, GT240 beats my old 9500GT in every way, i put it on 1920x1080 and everything on max, including AA and i had about 17 - 30fps, which is quite good performance for me. while taking AA off, i get nice avarage 30-40fps.
in GTA 4 same, no change in performance. GTA 4 is nutz tho, most hardware hungry game ever. i turned some things on max and it showed that it uses like 900mb of graphics memory, crazy, while resolution was still 720p, not 1080.

mostly im interested, what do you need in order to get TDU2 to run better. is it really my cpu lagging behind and causing the lag ? my cpu got quite hot, actually too hot. it was 74C with my super cooling.

IDLE temps are as follows:
mobo - 42C
CPU 38C
HDDs - 33 - 35C (all 3)
GPU - 32C (very nice and cool)

Dual Core 2.51Ghz
3Gb DDR2 667Mhz ram
1gb Ati HD 4350

I played prototype at 1280x800 everything HIGH but no AA, and got 35-45fps
not know of this tdu2 but gta4 yes,i get near to 11-15 fps on the onboard i used to hav earlier and that too will alot of tweaking and now i get like 40-45 on lowest 1024x768 earlier it was on 800x600.
My friend hav same specs with 4670 but he get nearly 50 fps at 1024x768 but other things on medium-low,None of the setting were on high.Your cpu is going real high temp,i had same thing with bully scholarship edition and i solved it.....i did 2-3 things not sure which did the magic.Through Msconfig i restricted ram to 1.5gb,i heard the game was causing issue on pc with more than 2gb ram, then i restarted and started game, then switched to desktop and with task manager set the priority to "low" got back to game,it did not lagged.....then i quit game and set my memory restriction off, back to normal, restarted pc and after that whenever i used to play the game i set process priority to low and it wont lag and not even crash,it used to crash after 10-15 minutes of gameplay just like my gta4....both games r from rockstar.

im getting new cpu soon. AMD Quad core Phenom II 2.5ghz. im very sure that my gaming experience is limited behind cpu atm.
cuz in GTA 4, i have no FPS change if i change graphics. well very small, but nearly none. i can change view distance, even put high textures, but still same. so it can only mean one thing, cpu cant handle it.

also in tdu2, i can see that my GPU sits on "cooling" 45C. 45C is very low for a GPU, they usually go up to like 70 - 90C or even over 100. some video cards have warning on 120C. so 45 is very cool for a video card. 60 - 70 is normal. from this i also think that cpu is the one causing lag. cpu was 65 - 74C, which is VERY HIGH for a dual core.
dual cores are usually cooler than single cores and even my 3.3ghz single core never got that hot. maybe 70, cant remember. there are some old posts if someone wants to look it up.

Its gta4 problem,i read somewhere that without quad core there is problem for game making shadows so it lags like shit....my gpu under heavy load or playing for 5-6 hours goes 60--65,normally its 35,when playing games for a bit while its 45-50 c my cpu even under load not passing 50 c at all....

My laptop specs are:
Core i3 M330 @2.1 Ghz
3 GB DDR3 SD RAM
320 GB SATA HDD @5400 RPM
Intel HD Graphics
DirectX11 with Windows7 x64 Ultimate OS/

Cool??

is it quad core dual core ? they never specify it. it just says i3 core 2.1ghz blablbla, and some benchmark tests, but not if its dual or quad. i dont really understand this nowdays. in most cases it just says cpu name, which tells me nothing.

looks good for a laptop tho.

@Sethioz Core i series contain 3 motherboards.
>Core i3
>Core i5
>Core i7

Core i3 is Mobile Intel Processor and it is also for desktop. Its 2.1 Ghz. It has 2 cpu and 4 threads.
We can say it advanced version of Core2Duo. It is very similar to Core2Duo. It has advantage of less nm in its architecture than Core2duo.
So, it generates less heat and has a great performance.

Its main disadvantage it does not support Turbo Boost Technology while Corei5 and Corei7 support.

yes i know i3 i5 and i7, i think their really expensive.
on amazon, i5 and i7 has crazy price, while one AMD cpu i want, is 2.5 quad core, its Phenom 2 and costs about 80% less.
also what i meant, is that i3, i5 and i7 tells me nothing, because they come with different frequancies.
i like it when its shown like this:

cpu - 2.8ghz dual core
very easy to understand. 2.8ghz and 2 cores, which means total speed of 5.6ghz.
ive also been thinking to get 6 core cpu, but for now quad core will be good enough.

Yes, i5 and i7 has super performance.. there is a price falldown in few months.
i7 turbo boost technology can speed up the Ghz from 2.1 to 3.2 .
If you go for 6 core/8 core CPU, it would be great! I bought my Dell Inspiron 1564 laptop in July 2010.
I desire to buy i7, but it was too costly, so i got i3.
And i have not faced a single problem, in i3.
If i3 is best, what to talk about i7? (^_^)

How did you calculated 5.6 Ghz?? Out of mind! havent heared about 5.6 Ghz anyway!!!

2.8ghz dual core, means it has 2 cores. 2 cores = 2x cpu. "2 x 2.8 = 5.6" simple math.
what did you think dual means then ? dual core is equal to two single cores running on speed of 2.8ghz

"i" cpus are overreacted, i dont think they perform better than any other cpu with same specs. they just cost more.
its kind a like with video cards, different company and it costs 50% more. like Asus costs a lot, while performance is exactly same.
like radeon hd4890 made by sapphire is much cheaper than other ones.
sapphire is usually cheap tho. i had sapphire video card, didnt had any problems, while some say that sapphire breaks easily.
card is a card, its exact same thing. just company logo on top of it is different.
same with cpus

what about your PSU?
Mine is 400 watt and NOT of some brand.
I see that your gt240 is weaker than the 9600gt while u can get a ati 4770 which is more powerfull than 9800gt and costs like 15-20 GBP more than the gt240.
Or else if u hav nice psu u might go for a 4850 which far surpasses the 9800GTX+ but is very much psu hungry.
My gpu upgrades r limited due to my psu,i cant go beyond a 4670 or a 9500gt.
Also i thought of posting All graphic card according to their performance rank, that will help people to decide the correct card for building their gaming pc.So here is ranking, best once on top, weaker one's below,so just do ctrl+f to find position of the card u all looking for :P

NOTE: If a card has mutliple variations of the same model (eg. a 512MB and a 1GB version), all of the position numbers are added and divided by the number of variations to give an average rank. This is to reduce confusion when purchasing a card as the variations in all cases were not significant enough to address.

i missed it coz when i got the list GTX590 was not there >.>
and i cant write shit in the list everyday. Also i m not interested in writing a thing that i will never have :P
But i hav googled and i think it positions along with gtx580....checked benchmarks and both card hav same fps with other things like ram and processor being the same,no idea y they cost it high though >.<
1 MORE important thing people need to know is,dont think higher card performs better or the first number in gpu means better cards. When choosing for a gaming pc take this for nvidia:

9400gt is alot WEAKER than 8800gt.Ofc many of us know, but still many dont know :)

the first number i.e. 9xxxgt and 8xxxgt tell that it is a 8 or 9 series card then the rest tell if its for casual use or game use....the better the later numbers the better the card for gaming.same is with ati:
3870 is alot BETTER than the 4350.The one i have :(
