RainbowTables vs Wordlists

Post by Sethioz »

I made this topic ... to show you ppl whats the difference between rainbowtables and wordlists.

Here is very easy example :
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rainbowtable:
charset - abcdefghijklmnoprqstuvwxyz0123456789 (loweralpha-numeric)
lenght - 1-8 chars.
size - 36gb (36 tables)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wordlist:
charset - abcdefghijklmnoprqstuvwxyz0123456789 (loweralpha-numeric)
lenght - 1-8 chars.
size - 26947.1gb (one list), its almost 27tb ..its MASSIVE!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
as you can see...rainbowtables takes way less space than wordlists, but ...
cracking a password with rainbow table takes longer than with wordlist.

Rainbowtables r basically wordlists....but they contain hashes, not words.
rainbowtables also has only beginning of hash and end of hash ... like this
32ed......................983d
but wordlist will contain every word in the given set. ..so there you go...
thats where this BIG size difference came from...
Only thing ... i dont know how long it would take to generate this kind of rainbowtables and wordlists...
on single PC it will take over 2-3 years for sure...writing 27tb ... maybe it takes less than generating rainbowtables...
because generating rainbow tables involves calculations too ... making a wordlist does not involve any calculations at all...computer will just make wordlist out of given charset and lenght.
