Different amount of ram in motherboard slots.

I have 1 gb ram in one slot of my motherboard and want to upgrade to 3gb ram but i heard from some people that if i use different amount of ram in another slot then it will make the ram not work.....so i have to use 1 gb in another slot too.....is that true?

Well there's no problem at all if you want to add 2 more GB RAM on other slot - it will work :)
However, you won't be able to use the dual channel function, which is a disadvantage.
If you want to have dual channel you should have 2 equal ram modules in 2 ram slots with the same colour.
Mind that in both cases your ram modules should be the same type.

Yes, if you want to use dual channel.
Just be sure that your motherboard supports it.

i have also 2 + 1 and works fine, however my friend had problems with it. older motherboards don't like this combination, but with newer ones there should be np.
note that i don't have same RAMs, they are totally different.
tried to look, but everest does not appear to show what RAM i have, it just says DDR2, but won't give specific info about RAM sticks.

i have a intel g31 motherboard and also when i scan it online it show that i have 4 ram slots but when i open my cpu there is only 2 slots available.....

i have 4 ram slots which support 8Gb in total and im using up 2 slots with 512MB in each and in the other 2 i have 2 x 2GB modules. works fine for me.
different manufacturers too. all ddr2 though

that is different case, 2 + 2 slots on motherboard are different. if you have 2 x 512mb and 2 x 2gb, then it works, but if you would swap one 512mb with 2gb, then it might not anymore.
all depending of the motherboard.

yes sethioz is right.....512mb in 1 slot and 2gb in another slot might not work but now i have 1gb in 1 slot and 2gb in another slot and its working fine for now.....
