uTorrent - connecting to mysterious places ?!

Post by Sethioz »

ive heard storys that uTorrent above 1.6.1 sends your download/upload information to developers, so they can sue you for uploading illegal things.
today i downloaded the newest uTorrent (1.8.4) and ran it. first it wanted to connect to 127.0.0.1 on some reason (most likely because it runs as server), then it tried to connect to "72.20.52.46" (HTTP aka port 80). which is very strange indeed. i did whois and it seems that this ip belongs to "staminus communications" @ http://www.staminus.net/

why would uTorrent connect to there ? what could be the possible purpose to connect to their site ?

weird is that i denyd it from connecting there during the setup and it seem to be working just fine. i could not bother to make further research, but there is definetly something strange going on.
maybe in future i will do research in details. for example sniff the packets and see what exactly is going on between uTorrent and that site when i would allow it.

reason why i updated is because 1.6.1 started to fuck-up on me. i am behind router where i do not have access, so ports are closed by router, but this was not problem before. i was able to download torrent at 1.2mb/s with this internet, but lately it started to fuck up badly. torrents just turned red and nothing happend. after i restarted uTorrent it worked fine for few mins and then again.
however 1.8.4 has some extra options and it seems that it was able to open ports somehow. torrents are green and downloading and it says that "your network connection is working as it should".
probably some new option "NAT-PMP".
