Skype secretly downloads update each time upon launch

Post by Sethioz »

This is something that seriously pisses me the fuck off, i have skype automatic updates DISABLED and it still notifies me of update, however i recently discovered that it is not just a notification. notification pops up AFTER skype have downloaded that 30mb installer, then it asks if you want to update, this is getting on my nerves so bad, i'm not on a high speed internet and it sucks up my bandwidth bad. 30mb download is quite a lot for this connection im on atm, at first i did not understand wtf is killing my bandwidth, but now i just took it easy and started monitoring. skype just started eating the bandwidth, this is when i realized that when 30mb is downloaded that pop up comes up and asks if i want to update.

What fucktards .. a fucking hidden update, REALLY? ghaaa right now i feel like i throw skype into bin and never use it again, this is not something they should be doing, fucking sucking up your bandwidth, how about those who are on 3G ? with like 1gb limit per month ..

In past, i contacted skype and asked why the fuck it keeps asking me if i want to update, if i turned automatic updates OFF ... they gave so idiotic reply that i didn't know if i should cry or laugh or just drop on floor. they said "skype can still get updates via windows update" .. not even knowing if i use linux, mac ..etc LOL. more over .. i have windows update killed off, not just disabled, but i used ultimate tweaker and blocked all sort of access to windows updates, its gone, windows update do not exist in my windows. so it is impossible it gets them via microsoft.

So my solution to block off that fucking update is that i blocked off the update IP addresses, first i blocked one, but then it popped to another, here are 2 IPs that i blocked to get rid of idiotic forced auto update. If you find more, post them here so everyone who hate hidden bandwitdh suckers can block that crap.

46.33.69.11
46.33.69.51

SHAME ON SKYPE ! like seriously, this is PISSING ME THE FUCK OFF !!! i clearly turned automatic updates OFFF in skype options, but it still keeps downloading it. damn those fishfaced monkeys.

Update:
seems like there are tons of update servers, so i had to block whole range of them

46.33.71.0 - 46.33.71.255
46.33.69.0 - 46.33.69.255
23.63.101.0 - 23.63.101.255
195.12.225.0 - 195.12.225.255
95.100.97.0 - 95.100.97.255

>> I just keep updating this list here, had to block another range today

Skype Customer Support being retarded:
They keep telling me to turn off automatic updates and completely ignore everything i said, now i even took screenshots and their reply is still similar.

I think this deserves a new reply, i think i solved this issue once and for all.
Launch skype and wait until it pops up that annoying update shit.
Go into your windows /Temp/ folder
this is where mine is located:

Code: Select all

C:\Users\Sethioz\AppData\Local\Temp
NOTE: Skype has recently changed the path, they now put the SkypeSetup.exe in the root of your /temp/ folder. To get there, go to start > search/run > type:

Code: Select all

%temp%
hit enter

find SkypeSetup.exe and delete it
now make a new file (any file, like newtextfile.txt ..etc)
rename that file to SkypeSetup.exe
right click and properties
make it "read only"
hit ok

now if you are using any tools that clean your /Temp/ files, like CCleaner, it can still delete it, so you must make exception / exclude it.
you're done, now skype can't open the file and can't write new file, so it won't give any messages anymore.

NOTE: make sure your windows is set to SHOW file extensions, otherwise you end up creating a file like "SkypeSetup.exe.txt" or something like that.
