5.1 / 7.1 surround sound headphones ?? wtf

Post by Sethioz »

I've known about surround sound headphones for ages, but right now i just thought im gonna buy myself surround sound headphones, so i started thinking ...
HOW THE FUCK can headphones be 5.1 ???? or 7.1 ...

let me explain to those who do not know what 5.1 or 7.1 means.
it means, 5 speakers + 1 subwoofer. (or 7 speakers and 1 subwoofer).
meaning, you have 2 speakers left and right (usually next to monitor), then 2 behind you, giving you surround effect and 1 in front / behind monitor + subwoofer (usually placed on floor).
if 7.1, 2 speakers are on sides to give even more realistic surround effect.
so .. how exactly headphones can be 5.1 or 7.1 ??
where the hell does headphones have subwoofer or how can they have 5 speakers ?
must be some alien thing ... meant for people with 1 or 3 ears .. or other odd number, maybe 5 ears ???

it should be called surround sound headphones or 6 speaker headphones..etc. i know some top end headphones do have more than just 2 speakers, they have like 4 - 8 speakers, maybe even more for low and high pitch sounds + surround.
also LOT of these so called "surround sound" headphones have only 2 speakers and they have "virtual surround sound" only, which sucks and is not as described.
virtual surround sound, is what most home cinemas have (including both of mine). When i watch movies, then it seperates speech from music and background sounds. so i hear speech from front speakers (side and front, or just front in some cases) and some of the music + background sounds come from rear and front.
that is NOT actual surround, its just virtual surround to give you the feel that you are in the movie. with 3D monitor / glasses you would have really cool experience.
but in gaming, its useless if you want to hear the location of enemy, surroundings..etc

i really do not understand this nonsense going on nowdays.

I'm looking to buy headsets too these days then came across 5.1 & 7.1 and I thought of the same thing :P
I didn't pay much attention but they had good bass and vibration effect as said in the reviews.
Maybe that's what they refer to the .1

if you buy one, make sure it actually has more than 2 speakers in them or its useless in gaming.
.1 marks the subwoofer not the bass. they might refer to it, but its not a subwoofer.
well it might be, but definetly not in 1 ear.

for example i have custom sound system, which is 5.2.
meaning i have 2 front speakers, center speakers, 2 rear surround speakers and 2 subwoofers.
main subwoofer is some small 20w woofer, so i hooked up another 200w subwoofer to my system.

headphones should always be equal number, not odd number. so 5.1 is complete nonsense. i would understand 4.2 or 6.2, but not 5.1 or 7.1

My speakers are 2.1
Headphones with vibration only have one vibrating motor on the top part, not on the left and right. Then it makes sense for them to be 5.1

I checked specs for a 5.1 headphone it says:
Technical Specifications:
- Subwoofer: 40mm Ø, 2 pieces with 100mW @ 4 OHMS
- Front/Rear: 30mm Ø, 2 pieces with 30mW @ 32 OHMS
- Centre: 30mm Ø, 4 pieces with 30mW @ 64 OHMS
Frequency Response:
- Subwoofer: 50-400Hz
- Front/Rear: 250Hz-17KHz
- Centre: 180Hz-14KHz
- Cable Lenghth: 2.0m
- Weight: 310gms (including cable)
lol it says it have a subwoofer.I dont see it anywhere though.
Here is a pic of the headphone.

This is not my point. vibration is not speaker. i am sure that if you put 5.1 into google, you get millions of results all over the different areas. i'm sure there are cars with 5.1 engine, frequancy 5.1, 5.1 mb size ..etc

5.1 can mean thousands of things, but when talking about speaker systems / audio systems. then that .1 means number of subwoofers, not vibrating motors.
these headphones should be 8.0, which is not used really, so it should just say 8 speaker headphones.

you don't need to see the subwoofer. subwoofer is speaker like any other, it just outputs low-pitched noise (bass). this is why you can't use subwoofer as normal speaker, because you would not really hear any speech over it. it can be setup as speaker, but would not give clear speech quality.
however these headphones don't look like they have so many speakers in there, but who knows ...
i just want to test them in gaming and see how good / bad effect they have.

when i play games with my 5.2 system, its so awesome when somebody shoots and bullet hits the wall behind me, just like it would be in my room.
or you can hear cars behind you ..etc
can't imagine gaming without surround sound.
if headphones have same perfect sound detection, i might use headphones in future, so i dont have to deal with background noises that distract me.

i highly doubt headphones can simulate real surround, but who knows. that's why i wanted to get one of those and test, but all this false information is making it hard to choose one.
