Cpu Cooler - choosing the right hardware and features.

talk about your computer or ask what program to use or what video card you like. others includes things like wordlists or color temps on monitor

Cpu Cooler - choosing the right hardware and features.

Post by KEN »

Every year during summer, my cpu overheats and while working my pc shuts down in the middle of work.I dont see this problem at all during winters. :P
So i'm replacing the heatsink and fan on my cpu because the current one is a crappy one which got one of it's needle broken meaning it doesn't fit on motherboard properly.
While on load my dual core cpu reaches above 80 and shuts down in 15 minutes or so.
I dont know if i should choose a fan with greater diameter or with faster rpm.
I want to know which of these 3 will be a better one to choose:

FAN 1:
Fan Speed: 1800 RPM
Fan AirFlow: 36.5 CFM
Air Pressure: 1.55 mmH2O
Fan Bearing Type: Rifle Bearing
Fan Life: 40000 hr
Noise Level: 19 dB
Fan Dimensions: 95 x 20
Heatsink Dimensions: 112.2 x 60.4 x 112.2 mm
Additional Features: Low Profile Extrusion Fin, Cross Shaped Design, Push-pin Design, Universal Mounting.

FAN 2:
Fan Speed: 2200 RPM
Fan AirFlow: 30.67 CFM
Noise Level: 22 dB
Fan Dimensions: 95 x 25
Heatsink Dimensions: 85 x 35

FAN 3:
Fan Speed: 3200 RPM
Fan AirFlow: 19.25 CFM
Air Pressure: 3.2 mmH2O
Fan Bearing Type: Rifle Bearing
Fan Life: 40000 hr
Noise Level: 27.17 dB
Fan Dimensions: 70 x 68 x 15 mm
Heatsink Dimensions: 77 x 68 x 22 mm
Unit Dimensions: 77 x 68 x 41 mm
Unit Weight: 243.8 g

and my motherboard is an ancient LGA 775 Socket one.

it's not your CPU fan, it's because you probably have default case without any air flow.
having 1 fan in front and 1 at back will already do the trick and another thing is to seperate GPU from CPU. use any paper or cardboard and just stick it between cpu and gpu, so gpu won't heat up CPU. GPU temps are always higher than CPU.
i made a paper wind tunnel for cpu that takes air from front of PC, cpu used to get like 55C, with this it never goes over 45C.

However if you still think it is because of CPU fan, one with most airflow ofcourse, but you will see it won't help at all. You need to sort out other issues that cause this. mainly add 12x12cm fan in front of the case and more at back if there's room.

I'll buy a cpu fan and a back fan too.
But i'm confused for the cpu fan.Do i need a bigger fan or a smaller fan which is faster?
bigger one is
Fan Dimensions: 95 x 25
Heatsink Dimensions: 85 x 35
2200 RPM

and smaller one is
Fan Dimensions: 70 x 68 x 15 mm
Heatsink Dimensions: 77 x 68 x 22 mm
3200 RPM

my current stock fan is 3000 RPM but i dunno about it's dimensions.

don't you have phsyics in school ?
bigger heatsink - lower temp
more airflow - lower temp
size of fan means nothing, airflow is what is important and size of heatsink.

you have no back or front fan ? ofcourse it overheats, it would be weird if it wouldn't. i can't believe you even dare turning your pc on in such conditions. I wouldn't even go to BIOS without any case cooling.

i dont go to school anymore,and when i did,i didn't had physics as a subject :P

No fan in front or back, just stock cooling and it used to work fine, never above 65C until the heatsink pin broke.I dont even use the thermal compound.
In winters even when gaming, temp never went above 55C.. 20C-30C at idle.
as i said,it gets hot only during summers.

so the fan 1
Heatsink Dimensions: 77 x 68 x 22 mm
3200 RPM

or the fan 2?
Heatsink Dimensions: 85 x 35
2200 RPM

fan 1 have smaller heatsink but faster fan so better airflow?
fan 2 have bigger heatsink but slower fan so bad airflow but better heatsink.
it's confusing -.-

i repeat, cpu cooler alone doesn't do shit. you need front and back fan! and 65C is way too hot for cpu. CPU should never go above 60C, even 60 is too hot already.
use your common sense ffs. i thought you're smarter than common idiot. Fan with more airflow is better, but it won't help. you are killing your PC. You need front and back fans.
I have a small CPU fan (stock) it used to be very hot and RPM went way up, but after i made wind tunnel out of paper (which seperated it from GPU's heat and takes fresh air from front fan) then it cooled down and CPU fan never goes on high RPM anymore. It used to go up to like 5500RPM which sounded like a fucking jet taking off, but now it won't go over 3500RPM (which is quiet enought).

like i said, fans alone won't help. Just like if you put a fan into vacuum, it won't do anything, because there is no air. Helicopter won't take off in vacuum either. You need airflow to cool the components, moving that hot air from side to side inside pc won't help you. you need to get fresh and cool air into pc and hot air out of it.

i got FAN 2:
Fan Speed: 2200 RPM
Fan AirFlow: 30.67 CFM
Noise Level: 22 dB
Fan Dimensions: 95 x 25
Heatsink Dimensions: 85 x 35

and now my temp even on load is not going over 51C
I did not even use thermal compound and still it's working good.
Case fan should also arrive today or tomorrow but was thinking if i should buy a thermal compound too?
