How to stay anonymous on the Internet

Post by bizarre »

Hi Sethioz,

Recently I signed up in a web site, where you can get some privileges by inviting friends to it.
You invite them by sending invitations by email - they open it and register to the site.
Of course, what many try is to create multiple emails and register from them.
However, the site authorities easily find that and ban the cheaters - they have their own request tracker and fraud team.
So it's not so easy to deceive them.
My question is what information they can gather about you when you visit the site via the invitation email - along with the IP and MAC address.
I also know about the User Agent in the browser - info about the OS, user, browser version, etc.
But these can be esily manipulated, so I think that there should be something else.
And most important how to be anonymous on the Internet.?
I came across a program called Cyber Ghost VPN on the forum - is it enough to stay completely anonymous?
Thanks in advance.

1. you are wrong about MAC, your mac can only be seen to the ISP, not to the sites you visit.
2. Cyber Ghost VPN - VPN means virtual private network, which is for local use only, not for internet.

what i would do, is use "TOR + vidalia" for IP changing. NOTE that recently i discovered that my current ISP is blocking TOR network, so i have to use the feature in tor that is meant to bypass it, sometimes it takes ages to connect, but it works fine.

then i would use completely different browser and email.
if you want to be extra sure, you can use virtual machine each time (virtual pc with installed OS), but if you are using proxy, then they won't get your info, they get the info of the computer that made the request.

however, some of the sites are aware of proxys and have blocked most common proxy server lists (like TOR network). for example if you try to log into paypal with a proxy, it gets locked (only USA IPs and accounts).

Thanks for the quick answer.
I tried TOR and it works fine.
But why should I use a different browser?
Can't I just change the User Agent settings?

that's what i meant, it's only important what the site sees, not what you actually use.
for example myspace won't allow you to use older firefox, so i just change the useragent to older or to a custom one that tells them to 'fuck off with their retardness' and it works fine.
